Ouch, I know the pain, I've got multiple to come out on 29th June. Doing it under sedation so in a long queue of people waiting for such a thing. With tooth ache again the last couple of days I might brave it up and change it to the more traditional method...

Well I survived! Sedation was great, all I remember was that my nose was itching the entire time, and the nurse spent most of the 45 minutes scratching it for me

Feel like I'v been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson today, but it's not as painful as I thought it was going to me. Being forced to spend the next few days eating jelly and ice cream isn't the worst thing in the world either!

So after a quiet few days post wisdom tooth removal I thought it time to update on progress.

21/03/16

A fairly routine Monday saw me pick up a couple of Northern DMUs, 1 EMT 158 on a Liverpool-Norwich, a XC 220 and one of few remaining 390s. I also thought I spied one of the last remaining Northern 323s, but alas I couldn't full make out the number, and can't now remember what service it was working to ask in the TOPS request thread. It'll have to wait for another time.

Another nice mixture, including whittling the 185s down by one more, taking me to 7 (I think!). I had a 'bonus' 30 minutes at Piccadilly in the afternoon (if you call missing the train as you had to run back to the office to get your car keys a bonus) in which to pick up 66595 working 406A all the way down to the south coast, the last remaining TPE 170, and chipped away further into the last few 185s.

Wisdom tooth D-Day saw just the one winner on the half-commute in the morning, as my bleary eyes just about managed to capture what I thought was 67018. After consulting our knowledgeable friends in the TOPS request thread it was confirmed that my eyes did not deceive me, as it was indeed the aforementioned off down to Wigan Wallgate as 058E

26/03/16

After licking my wounds (literally) following Wednesday I was beginning to get cabin fever by Saturday. There was only so much ice cream and jelly I could eat (28 going on 8!), and T20 World Cup I could watch, so by 6pm I was ready to get some fresh air. I decided upon a drive down to Hazel Grove, picked up some more ice cream from ASDA, and then wandered over to the station in time to pick up another EMT 158, as well as 66109 powering up the hill on its journey to Peak Forest as 082Q. I also witnessed a local youth crash his car into one of the columns supporting the multi-storey carpark during his usage of the lower level as a racetrack, which made my week

Not much then all told, but progress is progress, regardless of the pace. I have my day out at Doncaster on Friday which will help no end, of that I'm sure!

Doncaster will not disappoint, hope the weather holds out!

You've certainly been doing well lately, considering an ever-decreasing list of needs!

Thought I best get this up to date before Donny tomorrow!

29/03/16

The start of another three day working week was a productive one in the end, though more by luck than judgement. The day started with an unusually long wait outside Piccadilly aboard a dud 142, which it turns out was to allow 66623 an exceedingly early passage across the station throat and out to Tunstead. It's diversion via Marple probably influenced the early running, but it was a welcome bonus nonetheless!

After trudging wearily to Deansgate the same evening I was greeted by a thoroughly congested Piccadilly corridor, with trains stacked up in both directions . Sigh. Finally, a good 10 minutes late, in ambles a dud 150 to take me home to Hazel Grove. On the plus side it did mean I managed to catch a glimpse of 66549 nearing the end of its journey from Crewe to Trafford Park. Every cloud!

Just the one highlight today, with the first clearance of a sub-class for sight since our journey began as I nailed down the last 390/0, 390044 standing at Piccadilly :D

Final working day of the week, and another sub-class cleared, this time the 350/4s thanks to the sneaky last minute spot of 350405 making its way from Scotland to Manchester Airport. Like buses these now!

I also managed to pick up my first 37, as, after a quick check with the TOPS team, I could tick off 37688 as it stood at Longsight depot recovering after the previous night's trip around the North West with the NR test train.

It is at this point that, in preparation for tomorrow, I have taken the opportunity to update my central database of units with the information from my roving spreadsheet. I have a google docs spreadsheet that I can easily access on the go, which I then use to transfer sightings into the main database which tallies how many are remaining. The roving spreadsheet immediately flags up duds if inputted, so I have a good idea each day as to what new sightings have been made. A few discrepancies have been flagged, all showing a fair number of sightings, across various days, that I haven't yet transferred across from the on-the-go document <(

35 minutes later, having reassured myself both are now correct, it would appear I have also cleared the Northern 323s for over two weeks without realising! Needless to say I've refined how I record numbers slightly now!

In summary, cleared sub-classes are the 390/0s, 350/4s, and the Northern 323s (I've made my own sub-class, sue me!).

I'm also now just three away from the 390/1s, three away from the entirety of the 185s, and two away from the Northern 319s (another of my own sub-classes!).

Onwards to sunny Donny!

Wow you are doing well! Bet you're a little annoyed about your former method of recording numbers and the unnoticed clearing of Northern 323s mind!

Certainly looking forward to seeing how you get on in Doncaster!

And IIRC it is the same 153 which operates daily on that route so if you grab it once you shouldn't have to worry about getting it again.

You won't be alone at Doncaster, there are always watchers around watching all the movements :)

yes Doncaster is always a good spot for a spot of spotter spotting!

A good choice with Doncaster as it will open up a new area/types of train for you. It can be really busy but with coal having dropped off a cliff freight has thinned out a bit although Friday is a good day for engineering trains moving around to be in position for weekend works. Plus you might get a treat or two parked up in West Yard waiting for attention in Wabtec works behind the station. The resident 08's should be in attendance.

A trip to the top of the shopping centre car park you can see from the north end of the station might generate a look at what is inside Wabtec.

BTW it might be Darlo v Stockport in conference north next season. It will be like the old days!

If only I'd seen this whilst I was there! I was trying to get a decent view for the number of a LO unit that was just inside Wabtec, but alas it wasn't to be. If I'm ever back there again I'll pop up and see what's what.

I wish you the best of luck with promotion, just a shame we won't be meeting in the football league were we both should be, but for some chronic off-field mismanagement!

As for today, what a lovely trip out:

01/04/16

After the first decent night's sleep since the tooth removal I was up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning, meandering down to Hazel Grove in good time to renew the monthly pass before hopping aboard a dud 150 for the short trip to Stockport. Watching a healthy crowd board the 09:22 parliamentary service to Stalybridge (No April Fools, I assure you!), I then changed onto my first service with the sparkly new TPE franchise. Sadly they forgot to wash the dud pair of 170s that arrived on the 09:28, one covered in what looked to be manure, whilst the lead DMU had half a nature reserve caught on the front. Most uninspiring (partcularly when the train manager then spent 5 minutes on the tannoy drearily reading some management propaganda out about how fantastic the new franchise was going to be!). Nonetheless I grabbed a window seat in the front coach, and settled in for the trip back passed Hazel Grove (which always annoys me!) to Doncaster. A bonus sighting was also picked up along the way, 66622 sitting at Hope sidings.

Sheffield soon appeared, as did the first Meridian for sight, 222017, as well as my first 144 in the shape of 144009, and another voyager to add to the collection, 220004. By this time the peppermint tea flask had already been drained, and the Easter egg consumed, both somewhat prematurely given they were supposed to last all morning! As we approached today's final destination further 66s were spied, 66729, 66776 & 66778.

Needless to say Donny was bloody freezing, as I remember from previous fleeting visits. I quickly took up residence upon the most northerly bench on platform 4, and settled in for what I hoped would be a good day of sightings. I quickly realised I'd need to move further up the platform if I actually wanted to see anything going into platform 1, as the building works for the new platform 0 blocked the view. Gah. With that I decamped to leaning against a lampost further up, swigged upon my Starbucks peppermint tea (a bargain at £1!) and let the games begin.

As you'd expect, for the first hour or so everything was a winner. Plenty of VTEC stuff, the Northern 144s, 158s and my first 321 were all ticked off, along with more XC voyagers. It was also a nice surprise to find the fast stuff on the through platforms was easy enough to pick off, with most having to pass under double-yellows to inadvertently aid my eyes. They must have known I was coming!

Following this were the first Hull Trains 180s for the cause, before I also cottoned on to the fact that most of the Northern stuff was now on return workings, and could be ignored. One exception was 322481 from Leeds. At this point egg and cress sandwiches and a hot chocolate were consumed, and I wandered down to the southern end of the station to get the EMT working which had just arrived, 153321.

Freight was thin on the ground, with a bloody dud 67 the first non-passenger service through. After that I did clap eyes upon 66149 running light-engine south, 66760 & 66770. The latter was the cause of much excitement amongst a handful of photographers, one of whom almost ran off the end of the platform to get a shot of it leaving. Most odd, but each to their own.

Perhaps the most curious spot of the day was 91106, which arrived all on its lonesome at lunchtime. It was, after a short trip out north and back, in the furthest line west, and subsequently met by the charming 8853, who manfully shunted it off towards the back of the yard. I have absolutely no idea why, as it looked and sounded perfectly healthy upon arrival. Routine maintenance? Answers welcome.

By this point it was gone two, I was starting to pick up a few dud VTECs that had passed me northwards to Leeds earlier in the day and who were now returning south and, in all honesty, I was beginning to get a little cold and tired. I thus headed for platform 3B, and a dud 158 from earlier in the day which carried me to Sheffield. Here I had a short wait (utilised to purchase more hot chocolate) for a dud pair of 158s to take me to Stockport, so took the opportunity to spy another couple of 222s and some other bits and pieces. A surprisingly quiet service arrived from Nottingham, so I again snaffled a window seat in order to get a superb view of Mam Tor as we settled outside Edale behind a late running Manchester stopper. Made me consider for a second jacking work in and becoming a farmer.

All in all a superb day, certainly the database looks a lot healthier now! I anticipate another day off towards the latter part of the month, so will have to ponder where that should take me.

Very much so!

I've had a brief look at where to go next, but nothing is really taking my fancy thus far. Contemplated Leeds to get a few more Northern dirtboxes, then Leicester for the XC 170s and EMT stuff (as well as a decent bit of freight), as well as Liverpool to start on the Merseyrail stuff.

I want somewhere really that I can get there and back in a day, and where I'll have maximum opportunity to see as much stuff as possible that is new.

Liverpool would be easy from Stockport so perhaps keep that for another day as it could be almost spur of the moment. Somewhere like Cardiff is doable in the day from Manchester but will be a LONG day. You could try Carlisle or Warrington. I always find Leicester a bit dull but perhaps that is because i tend to be killing time there late or early.

London? You could spend time at places like Clapham junction, London Bridge, Bethnal Green and many, many more places. Even just going around looking at the terminus stations would get you loads.

At this stage the likes of Cardiff and London are going to be too expensive fare-wise. I want to do Cardiff at some point soon, but it'll need a bit more advanced notice. London I might try and get down to over the summer, probably when I go down for a wedding in August.

Leeds looks pretty cheap, so I may pop over there, or if it's a last minute thing then Liverpool as DarloRich suggests.

Welcome! You've made a lot of progress in a short amount of time, and the report bits are a good read :)

Have you tried Trainlogger or one of the Platform 5 books to log your sightings?

Perhaps you could do Leeds and York in he same day. There are ( it is alleged!) cheap advances on the Manchester - London route so might be worth booking up now and making a full day of it.

Wow, Donny was good to you! Well done on such a clearout!

Next trip could be to Derby, not overly expensive to get to or hard to do from Hazel Grove. Quick leap to Stockport, then to Crewe and over, or via Macclesfield to Stoke on Trent then over. Plenty of XC 170s and Voyagers, plus some HSTs at the right time of day on XC. Plenty of Meridians and 153s, 156s and 158s with EMT too.

Thank you for your kind words. After your recommendation I have just registered and inputted a few days worth of sightings on Trainlooger, looks excellent.

Leeds and York is a possibility, whilst I fear at this stage unless I get a day off confirmed for June, that London will have to wait until August.

Derby sounds like an excellent idea, think that could be the winner thus far. I've always fancied a wee ride on the Crewe-Derby line.

Nottingham I am doing in on the May bank holiday as I am there visiting friends.

Thank you all!

So another week ends, and it's not been all that bad considering the slim picking the Manchester area inevitably offers at this stage.

04/04/16

Monday lived up to its billing as the worst day of the week, with just the two new sightings as I arrived into Piccadilly for the new working week. I did well to sneak them in given I also had to pretend to listen to the girlfriend as we 'discussed' plans for the coming week. Who says men can't multi-task?!

150134
175008

05/04/16

As with yesterday, not much to excite the spotting soul again on Tuesday, despite having the commute to myself, sans girlfriend. Another voyager and bone-shaker, but nowt else.

220024

06/04/16

See above, really!

142094

07/04/16

Things got a bit more exciting today, with two nice 66 spots bookending the day. Firstly I got a great view of 66618 powering across Stockport viaduct en route to Tunstead, whilst the commute home began by watching 66556 as it began its epic journey to Felixstowe. In between there was also a couple more Northern dirtboxes to tick off.

66556
66618

08/04/16

Friday! Rejoice! To celebrate the powers that be decided to send out lots of stuff I've yet to spot (in relative terms). I wandered down to Deansgate at lunch to capture 66571 running light engine to Trafford, as well as 158777 off to Liverpool, and they even delayed my 1549 from Piccadilly to Buxton sufficiently long enough for me to hang around at Hazel Grove for mere moments before seeing 66077 go through. Happy days.

66077
66571
142045
156490

220008
319375

All this means I'm making steady if unspectacular progress. The remaining 185s elude me still, as do the final 390/1s, but all in good time.

Moreover, I have a day off confirmed for a week Wednesday, so I'm off to Derby as suggested above by a number of folk. Going via Sheffield to potentially pick up a bit of stuff there as well (figured I've seen a fair bit of what Crewe has to offer, and there's comparatively little at Stoke), so advice as to the best vantage point, as was the case with Doncaster, would be much appreciated. I plan on being in the area until at least 4, so I may also get across to Nottingham for an hour or so.

Most of my spotting last year was done whilst commuting into London with the missus, to be fair!

I don't miss much about that routine, but the half hour fester at the end of platform 8 for the train home was always good for the "red pen"!

Regards Derby, I would recommend the south (London) end of platform 4 from memory. This should give you a good vantage point of everything, including any movements off Etches Park (EMT's depot at Derby) which tend to reverse next to platform 6. If memory serves, around 1115 there's an Etches Park to Nottingham ECS movement with an HST that's booked to reverse in those sidings alongside platform 6, worth bearing in mind.

The end of platform 4 is also recommended for anything that reverses in bay platform 5, used a modest amount of times during the day by XC 170s between Nottingham and Birmingham/Cardiff.

Nottingham's a pain in the neck, as some trains use platform 4a. If you do the trek from platform 1 to this platform, you will no doubt see what I mean. Especially when you're trying to do this in a rush...

You won't be there for the 60 on a train of tanks on its westbound journey I suspect, but you might be for it in the afternoon. Someone wiser than me will know what to look for on RTT, it was around 0950 westbound and I believe booked around 1340 eastbound when I was last up. This was on a Monday mind, so this might not run on your trip.

Sheffield's probably best at the northern (Leeds) end for most stuff, except for some EMT Liverpool to Norwich trains and the 2-hourly stopper to Manchester. Some DMUs will inevitably be stabled on the sidings at the far end of platform 1 at the south end mind, and depending what's there you might not get everything (DMUs parked behind other ones for example).

I do hope it's a good time!

Amazingly helpful, many thanks Techniquest.

I've done Sheffield a couple of times, and found that I can wander around it fairly easily to hoover stuff up. It never seems to be that busy, which I've always thought odd.

Nottingham I've travelled to whilst visiting friends or watching Stockport, and can concur that it's a pain in the arse to get around, let alone spot from. If I do pop over there next Wednesday for an hour or so I will do so with no pretenses that I'll see everything. Although if Derby is cold enough I might welcome a bit of a run round to get the feel back into my toes!

hopefully you might get a varied selection. A lot will depend on whether anything is coming on or off the RTC or Litchurch Lane. Otherwise it will be units of various types all day. A return to Long Eaton or Spondon will give you a look at both depots and a little ride out.

There are two great pubs just off the station at Derby if you need a break and adequate refreshment!

Cheers Rich, I'll certainly make use of a quick hop to Long Eaton to snaffle whatever's lurking in the depots.

As an aside, is there anywhere near Manchester Victoria that's easy to spot from? Fancy ambling down there for a few lunchtimes but I really cannot be bothered to faff around getting a platform ticket each day.

It's got better at Victoria, compared to what it used to be like. However it's still New Street on platforms 3-6!

Not come across any good spots at Victoria I'm afraid, apart from the country end of platforms 1 and 2. The Bury end of the Metrolink platforms might get you some of the stuff.

I've hovered by the end of the Metrolink platform, but it's tricky to get much, save for the bay platforms next door. I might try Salford Central, see if that's more doable.

In other exciting news, I think I might be off to London for a days collecting in June. Will definitely need a strategy for that one!

i might suggest a time limit at each terminus station and then Clapham Junction with time on the SWT and SR platforms
