What for hills? So what's a 153 like then?

A 153 has a 14l Cummins engine with 285hp (IIRC it's a straight 6)

Smaller engines can generate higher horsepower but at a much higher RPM (and they can't sustain it). Be interested to see how long a PPM takes to go Coombe to Liskeard

And the longevity of the 14l Cummins engines speaks for itself, I think.

Good engines, but the 153 I travelled on between Derby & Crewe felt under powered!
The link railway built to link the Moorswater to Looe line to the main line at Liskeard station is a curving long climb! A switchback at Coombe Junction!

Newquay branch has a gradient in Luxuyan Valley where you go under the Trefry Aqua/viaduct of 1 in 37, with a speed restriction on a wooden bridge just before the climb!
