Just wondering if there are any part time drivers on here at all.
Pros and cons?
Pros and cons?
That's a fairly good breakdown of both sides of the coin. I'm thinking of dropping to 30 hrs. It is health related, plus a lifetime of shifts has burnt me out I think.Pros: More time off, better rested if you use the time well and less complacency, more flexible and can work overtime depot dependent, less boredom setting in with the role, less earlies/lates, can run a buisness or spend more time with family and see your kids grow up, still a decent wage for 2 days and pay a lower % of tax overall so net you have more in your pocket for each hour worked, less time communting, less miles and wear on your car, can avoid depot politics, less stress and more time for hobbys.
Cons:Less money, less pension, worse prospects in the industry if that's your ambition, colleagues might see you as lazy and have a lower opinion of you, less banter and comradery and you might not see some people for months on end, might be worse job security, less experience and higher skill fade and route knowledge fade. Some managers might give the worst jobs to PT because of "fairness", less routine, harder mentally to go back to work after longer periods off, might get bored at home, might not be able to get a BMW like your colleagues or a big house.

I don't know of any part time drivers, but some tocs have job share. Just 1 drivers job split between 2 staff, so it's a 2 day week for each and they can draw a pension aswell if they are old enough.Part time drivers not permitted at my TOC with the exception of those on family friendly or ill health hours. Only way to go part time is to take the strictly controlled job sharing path.
Yes know a few doing that. End up on almost a full time salary for two days a week & the lump sum in the bank. What’s not to like?I don't know of any part time drivers, but some tocs have job share. I think that was a Mon to Fri role with hours to coincide with rush hour. Quite progressive for the railway. Southern allow jobshare but you have to find your own sharee, it's subject to a trial period and I don't think they let you do overtime other than Sundays. A friend managed to go part time and his only complaint is that he still somehow manages to occasionally end up wih 5 shifts in a row so no idea how they do the rostering.C2c actually advertised for part time driver's a while ago. Probably a thread on it somewhere.
Is your friend part time or job share though?I think that was a Mon to Fri role with hours to coincide with rush hour. Quite progressive for the railway. Maybe if it was to cover rush hour , it possibly could of been something like 5 shifts of 4 hour's , rather than two days a week.I think that was a Mon to Fri role with hours to coincide with rush hour. Pretty sure he is job share as he had to find someone else to partner with.Is your friend part time or job share though?
With job share you tend to do full shifts but only half the roster. Some choose to do two days a week others could be two weeks on, two weeks off. All very strictly controlled & scrutinised by the union. Both drivers have to adhere as if they are just the one person.Pretty sure he is job share as he had to find someone else to partner with.
C2C was 5 x 4 hour shifts a week I think, looked pretty good for someone with caring responsibilities.
