Thought I'd start here as well.

Sunday 30th Sept 2018.
As SWMBO was off the the cinema with the daughter I decided to do a trip out.

First destination was Willesden to see if I could see any of the new 710s. BINGO.
710261 and 710266 both on the WCML side of the shed.
710263 and 710267 both near the DC lines also there was a 08 Shunter. D6371 ???

Down to Euston then Watford Junction and back to confirm the 710s next to the WCML.

Engineering works on the circle line meant no trip to Paddington so I walked to Kings Cross and on to Hornsey to see 717s which I did.

Back to Kings Cross and over to St Pancras and a brief run to Ebbsfleet to do a mileage accumulator on 395s then home.

Full listing of everything seen https://partimespotter.wordpress.com .

Sounds like a nice jolly... There's lots of those darned 710s at Derby (Bombardier Litchurch Lane) but none of them have identities on them :(

I may have a free Saturday as SWMBO maybe taking her Mum out for a meal.

Decisions, decisions:
Doncaster
Hackney Downs (315 & 317 mop up)
Crewe
Stafford
Reading
Paddington

Do I go out an do some haulage, mileage accumulation or just plain spot and photo ???

Sadly I doubt I'll get to Litchurch Lane anytime soon.

Tomorrows options:

Option 1.
To Willesden then around the back of Old Oak to know off a few 345s. But it's due to be rather wet so I have option 2

Option 2:
Marylebone to Banbury (68 haulage that I bet will be 68015!!!)
Banbury to Reading.
Reading to Paddington (maybe catch up with a few 387s) on this one ... if I get a 387s I may jump off at somewhere like Hayes and then catch the next one. Or if I can see an 800 coming I will jump that.

Option 3:
Stay home at start the build of one of my Model Railway projects.

Option 2 won out in the end:
I managed a Rolling Blog while out and about.
The Full Report is now on as well.

New line between Banbury and Oxford.
A number of new spots and haulage made for a pleasant day.

Wednesday 10th Oct I am intending to do Leeds to see my first 333s hoping to do a rolling blog on this one too.

Thursday 11th Oct off to Ipswich (and Derby Road) for the day. I may do a rolling blog for this one depending on the power left in the batter of my laptop.

Sundays is always a bit of a pain going out. I try to avoid them most of the time.

The trip was on Saturday. I tend not to go on Sundays as much now. Last weekend was an exception. The Saturday timetable wasn't too bad.

I shall check your blog out once I'm home as the SWR WiFi sometimes doesn't like blog sites

Hope you enjoy it. I'l trying to go back to writing a narrative rather than a list of trains and traction.

I had to go over to Thamesmead yesterday to see someone from work and was taken over by car (I know not the best way to travel). For the return I asked to be dropped at Bexleyheath so I could get a train back to Victoria rather than London Bridge. Of course as I entered the platform my train, the 14:42, disappeared out of the end of the platform. Typical! LOL

Now I was faced with a 29 minute wait at the station which, to be fair, suited me a lot.

First train arriving at the station was 2U42 Victoria to Gravesend in the form of 465034, 465003 followed by 376027, 3760025 on the 2C45 Barnehurst to Cannon Street. 2M41 Cannon Street to Slade Green was 465010, 465019. Not one 'cop' so far surely my puck would change? 2M42 Charing Cross to Dartford was another pair of 376s. 376020, 376018 which almost got blocked by a ten car 2C46 Dartford to Charing Cross in the shape of 466014, 465910, 465163. At 15:12 my train arrived 2U54 Gravesend to Victoria comprised of 465158, 465030.

I managed to miss a couple of oncoming down trains en route between stations but I did managed to see a couple. At Kidbrooke 465174 formed 2M44 Charing Cross to Dartford then between and Blackheath I managed to see a 29 minute late running freight train that would have passed Selhurst earlier. 66750 headed 6K40 Tonbridge west yard Gbrf to Grain Foster Yeoman Gbrf.

Between Blackheath and Lewisham provided me with only one unit 466008 was on 2U46 Victoria to Gravesend, but I missed the other unit that was with it.

At Lewisham I managed see two trains. 2L46 Charing Cross to Dartford was 465916, 465016 was in the station but as we pulled out 2M45 Cannon Street to Slade Green was approaching formed of 465194, 465902. Now we travelled over the the Lewisham Vale Junction which i initially thought was a new bit of track for me. Technically it was. I had previously travelled on the down line from Waterloo via the Linford Street curve to Tunbridge Wells. in summer 2017 so this was a technical 'line cop' as I was on the up line this time.

At Denmark Hill 9H41 Clapoham Junction to Daltson Junction was inthe station as 378223. Then close to Brixton 466025 plus another unit was working 2K44 Victoria to Gillingham. Getting closer to Victoria I noted 375609, 735829 on 1S48 Victoria to Ramsgate at Linford street Junction.

The rest of the trip was uneventful and Stewarts Lane was empty as far as I could see.

Once at Victoria I had about 3 minutes to make the 16:00 2B84 Victoria to Epsom Downs formed of 4558810, 455830.

So no new units or locos at all !

Indeed ... but sometimes it's just the being out on the station and anticipation of what is coming.

Living in the midlands I don't fully understand all the telephone numbers you've been using, but it seems like it would've been more entertaining than driving even if it was all duds.

Bit of an update:

Mostly I haven't been out but I have been posting up the diagrams for 313201 (the Blue.Grey one) and 387105 (the loanee in a White with red GX livery)

Trip wise it's been quite (as has the passing of local stuff here at Selhurst as I am not always in a position to pop out and see thing). Saturday I went up to Hatfield and managed to see a load of 717s and 91119 (being dragged see video on the blog).

I have two days leave left this year .... Train outings? hmmm maybe I'm not 100% sure yet ... hope so though.

Trying to decide on a spot location for next week either Tuesday or Thursday.

These are some ideas.
Leeds.
Stafford.
Rugby.
Sheffield.
Manchester station (which one for most pacers).
c2c Rail pottering around (need to see 1x 387 and haul on all of the c2c ones).
GW Pottering around to get haulage on 387s (need all of them).

Open to other locations.

Would like to see a lot of (cl.142, cl.143, cl.150) Pacers (before they go completely) I need about 60 of the things.
Never seen an 88.
Need about 20+ cl.323s.
Needs a lot of cl.325s.

Forgot to mention, if the weather is ****e then I want to be undercover. Also not anywhere where I am going to get hassle for having my camera out and train photographing.

All ideas welcomed

Thanks in advance,

In Manchester, Victoria is good for Northern 142s and 153s which should be going soon plus 150s and 156s - in any combination but not exceeding 4 coaches! Often an ex FGW 150 and 153 combo to be found on Rochdale- Cltheroe services. You need to get onto the platform though as it is all barriered.

The through Platforms 3-6 are all pretty dark for photography (not sure whether you would get any hassle) except at the east end where you are in the open. But of course it never rains in Manchester.:D

However standing here you may well miss some units that arrive from the west and depart back there; similarly a few trains arrive from the east and go back there from the through platforms. Others coming in from the east will terminate in Bay Platforms 1 and 2 under the new roof - light and airy. Lots of Metrolink trams passing through too. Quite a few TPE 185s too - mostly running late or abandoned with no crew...And the occasional freighter.

As I assume you are coming from London, then you will arrive at Piccadilly. Again it is barriered but you can move between all platforms via a footbridge at the southern end of the train shed. Platforms 8 and 9 are the longest and you will see all the movements from there and often quite a few people there with cameras etc. Platforms 13 and 14 are the through platforms on the southwest side and can be seen from here too. But the ends are outside the train shed and don't have a canopy all the way down. If it rains, then you can still see everything from inside the well-lit train shed by moving about.

Lots of Northern Pacer, 150 and 156 action - not seen a 153 there - plus 323s and our new trains - 319s;). Usually not quite as many 142s as Victoria though. Also XC, TPE 185/350, EMT 158 and sometimes 156, TFW 175s (occasionally 158 or even 150) and a couple of freight paths through 13/14 at around xx30.

Most of the Pacers at Piccadilly won't appear at Victoria on the same day.

You can get from Piccadilly to Victoria round the newish Ordsall Curve using TPE every 30 minutes, catch a tram from the Undercroft at Piccadilly (destination Bury) or the free bus which goes the scenic way round

https://assets.ctfassets.net/nv7y93...c4cb8/18-1450_Free_Bus_A4_tear_off_map_v2.pdf

Almost as quick to walk if you know where you're going

In Leeds there are also plenty of Pacers around - both 142 and 144s - the latter come to Manchester rarely now. Most action at the west end of the station. Also many Northern 150/ 170 but not many if any 156s

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Helps a lot CW Thanks.

I think this trip I'll do Piccadilly and maybe in the New Year (weather permitting) I'll do Victoria. Piccadilly is one of those stations I have been through but never exited or spent any time in.

At Man Pic you will also get the 67 on the loco-hauled North Wales turn and TPE 350s to/from Scotland.

Maximum Pacerage - 4th December 2018

With the Pacers (Classes 142, 143, 144) being phased out by 2020, the main purpose of this trip was to 'cop' and photograph as many of the class before their demise.

An early start saw me head to Selhurst station for 06:00. A couple of minutes after I arrived up popped a mate from work so we ended up chatting. 1F01 Brighton to Victoria was delayed by 7 minutes, looks like the Quarry line was closed northbound. 377464, 377426 still got me to Victoria before the slow train. Down to the Victoria line to Euston (11075) in plenty of time for the 07:20. So what do you do if you have time at a station – Yep break out the notebook!

Sat at the buffers on platform 1 was 90043 in its Freightliner livery at the end of the sleeper at the other end 87002 sat waiting to take the ECS to Wembley InterCity Depot.

Winners at Euston are few and far between for me now but 390020 was there on 1F11 Euston to Liverpool Lime Street and 1D81 Euston to Chester threw up 221109 as another ‘cop’.

Boarding my train 1H08 Euston to Manchester Piccadilly was 390118 a first for haulage.

Willesden had a 710 just outside but we moved a little too quickly to see the number. At Wembley area I managed two ‘cops’ 90035 and 67004. Also in attendance were; 66501, 37611, 67024, 90019, 66019, 92019, 66015.

Rugby as an 86 but I couldn’t get the number but I managed to see the 57: 57308.

Near Atherton we passed 6X41 Dagenham Dock Receiving to Garston Car Terminal with 92043 pulling it (Thanks The_Train). At Stoke on Trent I got a winner in the shape of 323224 and Stockport also revealed 15128.

Longsight was empty apart from an 08 but the other side of the tracks was 68020 (in EWS livery) with the stock for the 1D34 Manchester Piccadilly to Holyhead [Consist: 12177, 12183, 12182, 12184, 82308]

In Ardwick Jn area I managed three more ‘cops’: 156464, 323231 and the first of the Pacers I had come to hunt down – 142040. So now up to NINE winners before even arriving in Manchester.

Manchester Piccadilly.

Off the train, over the footbridge and to the London end of platforms 8/9 and that was the best place to be. It was quite misty for about 45 minutes but it did ease off thankfully. There is nowhere to sit that far down the end of the platform, maybe a few nice seats for us older spotters???? LOL

The first 350/4 came through as 350406 to start me off right. 150111, 323232, 142014 142038, 221144, 156403, 156410, 142052, 156468, 158774, 150131, 323229, 150224, 323224 were all the winner before 10am bring me up to 23 ‘cops’.

10:00 – 11:00
The winners still came along; 150269, 323236, 142033, 175113 all inside ten minutes. I’d forgotten that 175s went into Piccadilly. Then came a really good one for me in the shape of 4M95 0344 Southampton M.C.T. to Trafford Park F.L.T. 70005 (now leaves me with just six to get of these (003, 006 012 (never getting that one), 813, 815, 817)), 156443 came through next and ten minutes later another new one 323230. 323223 arrived at the same time as 185104 and just before 10:30 221128 pulled in from Southampton Central. The next half hour started with 150104 going in the book as out friend The_Train would say along with 185137, 150112. The next 350/4 I got was 350408, the thought of travelling from Glasgow to Manchester on a 350 fills me with dread. Two more new pacers were written down in the shape of 142044 and 142054. The mist had cleared and it wasn’t too cold which was nice as I feared rain. A Norwich bound service gave me 158863 but on the back of it was a new one 158773. Two more ‘cops’ popped by with 150129 arriving first and two minutes later 150203 coming in on an ECS move. Now up to 41 Winners !

11:00 – 11:35.
I decided that I would pop round to Victoria and decided on catching the 11:35 train which wold leave me 30 odd minutes to get a few more numbers and photos. Immediately 150116 popped up and joined 185129 in ‘the book’. 185135 arrived from Cleethorpes and an ex Llandudno Junction was formed of 158831. A new vomit comet arrived 390157 from London continuing the good run. Another Welsh 175 numbered 116 came in from Carmarthan. It was hectic, photographing and writing numbers down is hard LOL 156455 and the only other 350/4 409 arrived as I went off to platform for the TPE train.

1P23 Manchester Airport to Newcastle duly arrived as 185129 sadly not a ‘cop’ for sight, but it was for haulage.

Manchester Oxford Road.
150201 too the tally for the day up to 49 and the 50thwinner was 156460 that was from Preston and Windermere to Piccadilly.

Manchester Victoria.
Now that is a seriously dark station! Not inviting at all but very good for spotting. From the ‘lighter’ end of the platforms it afford you a good view of the trams. If your not in to trams then scroll down … you’ve been warned:

3103, 3069, 3078, 3049, 3048, 3044, 3010, 3096, 3007, 3057, 3032, 3100, 3117, 3001, 3017, 3020, 3016, 3077, 3024, 3029, 3052, 3073, 3116, 3107, 3004, 3037, 3014, 3040, 3021, 3054, 3118, 3084, 3010, 3106, 3061, 3065, 3092, 3009, 3011, 3029, 3035, 3112, 3082, 3012, 3026, 3086, 3019. ALL winners.

Normal service is now resumed:

11:47 – 13:09.
In the 15 minutes before midday I enjoyed a chat with a chap from Warminster. Whilst collecting 150101, 150222 and 150106 as new. Then another new Pacer 142011. From midday onward it was a bit quiet but that didn’t stop the winners to turning up regularly.

150205 and 153357 arrived together from Rochdale then 153305 and 156459 were headed to Blackburn. Another Pacer 142055 was also heading to Blackburn and from there 150118 came in. TPE didn’t let me down when 185111 came in heading to Selby. 185145 arrived from Middlesbrough and a Southport bound train came in with 150117 in its formation. 9M08 Newcastle toi Liverpool Lime Street was 185127 this was followed by a Leeds bound 156489. 153360 pulled in with a Clitheroe train. Pacer 142094 terminated then a rare treat. 5Z02 1200 Longsight Wheel Lathe to Newton Heath T.M.D. was a pair of Pacers … 142028 and 142060. Ex Scarborough TPE train was 185121. I had intended to catch the 12:39 back to Piccadilly but it terminated at Victoria. Still it gave me two more Pacers 142037 and 142053 together from Southport.

Now another for both sight and haulage. 185139 formed 1P72 Middlesbrough to Manchester Airport and took me back to Piccadilly.

Manchester Piccadilly
13:20 14:15
Walking from platform 13 over to get some food (and use the facilities) 185119 was sat at the buffers and departing in was 175103 heading to Tenby or Dinbych-y-pysgod if you so wish. An extremely overpriced Burger King later and I found myself by platform 12. 323237 had been sat there all day and it was a cop, to think I might have missed that one!

Back to the end of platforms 8/9 but it took until 13:43 for a new one to hit the book 158770 on a Norwich train. It was now more duds than ‘cops’ until 185149 and 158826 arrived. Now my fear of rain materialised and it began to drizzle, so a snap decision was made to get the next London train. I’d just missed the 13:55 which went via Crewe and I wish I caught that as there was a new unit delivered and I might well have got a look at it. 1A42 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston was to be my train with 390131 being a new haulage.

Again Longsight disappointed but Longport had a number of locos and my train was passing slowly. One ‘cop’ was seen 56009. Whilst en route I made the radical decision to bail out at Milton Keynes Central and then jump the Southern train to Selhurst. Two ‘cops’ in the shape of 390013 and 221115.

Total of 88 Heavy Rail 'cops'
Total of 49 Trams.
Total miles 384m 08ch.
New Haulages: 4

A FULL list will appear on the blog shortly.

I'm surprised you didn't get off at Oxford Road to use the free toilets there rather than paying whatever it is at Piccadilly ;)

A productive day for your book of sights, no doubt the person from Warminster didn't need any of the former GWR 150s floating around

Good to know the loos at Piccadilly are now free, were they the ones in the main concourse or in the little waiting area near P13-14?
