People will be able to answer the question if you define ‘best’ (cheapest? Quickest? Least changes? Most comfortable? Etc.) and if you say what date and time you are going, and when (if) you want to come back.

That journey will involve a minimum of two changes, optimally Carmarthen and Manchester Piccadilly. Your Carmarthen to Manchester service will be booked a 175 but could be substituted by anything ranging from a 158 to a 150 to a Dogbox.

There are only a handful of itineraries each day between these two stations with the current timetable, and the last departure from Huddersfield to Pembroke is at 10:25am! So you will definitely not be doing a day return. That being the case, I can't find any immediately obvious flexible ticket cheaper than the through Off-Peak Return at £103.50 (this one is valid at any time).

The only real alternative is Cross Country from Bristol PW to MAN, with or without a change at Birmingham. That's more changes though. I only did this route once when a 150 turned up at Whitland, and it was fine, but only possible on flexible tickets. CC to Wakefield or Leeds is horrendously expensive.

There would have to be a change at Birmingham (inconvenient as the Bristol to Manchesters have disappeared since COVID
