On the lens subjectm, not a wide lens but a fisheye lens. A purely wide angle lens wouldn't introduce anywhere near as much barrel distortion.

Well said! I have had some interesting effects from a 24mm-720mm (yes, I know that sounds preposterous) at either end of the zoom range, but nothing like that, and I suspect a normal wide-angle 12mm is also indeed incapable of that much fisheye effect!
