Meeting up with some pals to do the Dewsbury - Stalybridge Ale Trail, and as I had a couple of hours spare before meeting them at Dewsbury I decided to give the Sheffield-Penistone-Huddersfield line a try.
Delightful rural railway with fabulous views and quirky little stations en-route, single track in sections and takes nearly 80 minutes to complete the trip.
The cost of building the railway must have been enormous with numerous bridges, viaducts and many of the stations are perched high above the villages they serve.
I wonder when the last time a steam train traversed the route?
If you are ever in the area definitely worth a try, especially with two fantastic real ale bars inside Huddersfield Station and the excellent Sheffield Tap at the southern end!
