Not really, no. We can never guarantee to find the cheapest combination, and it depends on how much you value time vs money. It depends on various factors such as what is the earliest you are prepared/able to depart, and what is the latest you can arrive by? It can also make a difference if you want a single or, if you are returning, is it a day return (if so, CDRs can be used) or a period return. If it's just a case of looking at splitting, then my advice is to look at the timetable - or a map - and then look at the fares for intermediate points.

There will be many intermediate points and it is impossible to check them all, so you just have to prioritise with certain key stations and check those. For example, Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Bristol, Cheltenham, and so on...

But the cheapest splits may well be via more circuitous routes such as Worcester.

National express would be far, far cheaper - they do a service o Whitehaven, ableit, it will not be direct.

But much much much slower I'd have thought.

As Yorkie said, the best option really depends on the poster's needs, specifically:
* which day
* what time does s/he need to depart and or arrive
* is it a return
* if so, when is the return date and again are there time restrictions
* does the poster think that s/he will be eligible for any railcards (usually age based, but there are also some others)
* (roughly) how much extra travel time is the poster willing to put up with in order to save money

I don't think the difference in times would be that great comparing train to bus - especially given the amount of time it takes to get round the Cumbrian coast line.

But you'd travel to Whitehaven via Carlisle, and you can get there from Birmingham pretty quickly - so the overall travel time by train from Birmingham to Whitehaven is 4 hours. By contrast the coach between Lancaster and Whitehaven takes 3 hours.

At the other end of the journey, Penryn to Plymouth is 2 hours 30 by coach, compared to 1h30-2h by train.

For the overall trip, then, the train is clearly going to be much faster.
