Simple question, is an off peak return from Peterborough to Penrith valid out via Manchester and return from Newcastle?

I'm cycling the C2C across northern England later in the year and the advance fares on offer for Peterborough to Penrith and Newcastle to Peterborough journeys currently come out as more expensive than an off peak return for the times I want to travel.

York is as far north on the ECML that you can go with such a ticket.

A ticket to Carlisle would be needed to go via Newcastle.

Incidentally, Ely to Carlisle is quite a bit cheaper than Peterborough to Carlisle, in case that helps.
