tbh the OP was correct and passengers have no right to expect tickets to be issued in anyway other than the terms and conditions set when they bought the ticket (i.e. to take the original card and ref number to a nominated station). The sister could have picked up the tickets and posted them or the passenger could have jolly well bought there own tickets!
EMT are right to prevent any chance of fraud and adhere to the terms that are set when the ticket is purchased NXEC etc should follow by their example!

Maybe not a right but common sense should prevail in this instance if she had booking reference number couple of questions just to confirm an address of person making booking & person collecting tickets, OP states she had her parents with her think between 3 persons one would have identification.
Maybe he was just looking for the reintroduction of "jobs worth of the week" as seen on That's Life in the 70's:oops:.
What happens for instance if since making booking you have had new card issued with differing number or your tickets are ordered through a company PA on company creditcard.
As for the posting of tickets cannot see many people takin that option with postal strike looming.
Going slightly off topic what about passengers that forget or copy wrongly the booking reference number in fact certain TVM do not even call for the number before issuing tickets

<( People who turn up less than 10 minutes before departure with incomplete/no ref. and/ or card demanding "their" ticket are a complete nightmare, they get most upset when told they will have to go in ticket office. At least these people have to sort it at station instead of jumping on the train - barriers have some uses !!

... the SHERE Smart system displays NO OTHER INFORMATION than - name, date of travel, dep/dest & last 4 digits of debit/credit card ... this is down to the Data Protection Act and the company you have booked the tickets through.

... as an example ... TheTrainline.com is not a TOC, and issue's approx 18% of UK rail tickets sold ... the TOC merely act's as a remote printer for the customer ... and must adhere to the T&C.

... Business Account customers, ie; booked via a secretary/BT Centre work on different T&C and the security levels are therefor lower and they merely present something with there name on - the company responsible for the card is accepting any 'possible' fraud in this instance.

... unfortuantely we no longer live in the 1970's ... we live in an era where fraud is an every day occurance ... and ultimately it's THE BANKS that want to keep this as low as is possible.

Why is everyone getting hot under the collar ?

Yorkie seems to have forgotten that we dont have British rail anymore, that means that each indivdual train company sets in place its own secruity and anti fraud protection prcedures.

If its a requirent to show prove of purchase, then that is what one has to do. SIMPLES!

I'll gloss over the fact that many of us disagreed with the break-up of British Rail and still do  .

With regards to the current system, there are some rules such as those surrounding advanced purchase tickets, who can use the first class lounge etc, which the TOC's use to distinguish their product from other TOC's - so naturally these will have to differ between companies.

For everything else though, health and safety rules, transaction security, station security, complaint proceedures, penalty fare enforcement etc, it makes sense to standardise proceedures across the network as much as possible. This avoids confusion amongst staff, passengers and railway enthusiasts and makes it easier for people to know where they stand, for example, if you have someone who dosen't use the railways very often and they're used to collecting advanced purchase tickets from one station, its a lot easier for them to remember one proceedure if they find themselves having to collect them from another.

I agree that if theey have nothing then that is going to be a nightmare, but what if they give you the booking number, name and address? Can you confirm that their ticket is then printed, it would be interesting to confirm that NXEA is in line with NXEC, XC and VT in applying common sense.
