Given the preponderance of generic topics in this subforum (it is called General Discussion after all) I thought I'll add another.

Body modifications. Got 'em? Want 'em? Wish you were rid of 'em?

Basically I ask because for some reason I really want this kind of ear piercing:

but I've never had a piercing before, and this one's a bit of a scary one, and it'll be ages before I'm allowed a flappy ring. (My mother reckons I should get the lobe pierced first to try it, but I really don't think that would look good on me, and I also kind of want it before I graduate next year because I'm a showoff.)

I also want some kind of abstract tattoo, but I can't think of what form it should be.

I personaly don't have anything. I don't mind piercings (Within reason - ears, noes, tounge and belly button. But lets not go over the top with them) I don't want any though- not my thing.
Tatoos are, I think, a complete waste of time, however if people want one then I can tolerate it (Again within reason, I don't like it when people end up with more ink than a box of felt tips).

What I don't like, realy can't stand, hate it when people have it done and wonder why the hell anyone would want it done is those massive stretch hole things in there ears. Espesialy when they go that big you could fit a bus through it. I once spent a whole lecture sat behined a guy that had one, he spent the whole lecture poking his pen through the hole, it made me feel sick.

    Thats just my 2p

Piercings are a sign of individuality.

That's why all individual minded teenagers have to have some.........

I have never been able to understand the whole point of jewellery. What is cool about hanging a bit of metal off yourself? Same applies to permanent tatts, although I can see the fun in a temporary one.

I had a girlfriend once that pushed me into wearing a neckchain and St Christopher. I wore it, under pressure, until the chain "accidentally" broke and it was consigned to the dustbin of history. Same happened to the girlfriend, incidentally!

I was quite impressed by Prince William refusing to wear a wedding ring. Good man!

I'm not a fan or any sort of adornment, the only jewellery I wear is a watch, and the discussion about wedding rings ran on for a long time when the future Mrs Pilchard and I were talking about the matter. It got quite emotive at times, but after a while she accepted that I'm kind of old fashioned with regards to certain things, and this is one of them.

And we had that discussion long before William announced he wasn't having a ring; I like to think we set a trend.

That's strange. I'm considered a "individual minded teenager" (17), and the concept of piercings repulses me. Maybe its because I don't particularly see the sense in causing pain to look good.

    She broke?

The wife and I have wooden wedding rings which are a bit different. I've a silver engagement ring with an engraving in Elvish (my wife offered to get it in White Gold or Platinum but I prefer silver and it'll be cheaper to replace if/when I lose it!) I got the engagement ring as she asked me - she asked me with a 99p cheapo one to make sure she didn't get an expensive one she didn't like. Usually I wear one or the other of mine. The wife either wears hers or her Grandma's engagement ring.

I seem to have a lot of friends with tattoos but no desire to get any meself (I know one girl who has large tatoos of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein on her legs amongst others - they've obviously had a lot of work put into them but they're not my thing). The wife came home once looking guilty and revealed her and a friend had had a few drinks and got belly-piercings. Surprised me but didn't offend me or anything.

I wonder if I was put off piercings by a friend I knew who had a go at piercing his nipples himself - they both got infected. And the holes in the end weren't big enough to put anything through. Then there was the bloke I knew with a prince albert who insisted on showing it to everyone in the pub whether they wantd to see it or not.

I have three tattoos. One on the inside of my left wrist, one that follows my spine down from the top of my shoulder blades, its about three inches long. Then my final one is at the bottom of my back, each one represents something special to me.

All can be kept covered, unless i want them on show. I have plans for a fourth, but it will be my last.

I have two tattoos myself, one on each shoulder. My left one is the Pink Panther (I'm a huge Peter Sellers fan) and the right one is the Union Flag. I got these in about 1993/1994 and don't regret them one bit. The reason I chose the shoulder is that if I want to show them off I do, if not - I don't.

I've always thought the next one would be a dragon on the back of my left leg - not got the courage to do that one..........yet. Living in China (well ok, Hong Kong) it just seems to fit in with the local scene. Maybe one day.

I draw the line at piercings though, no idea why - just seeing people with nails through their eyebrows or lips just seems a little odd to me. No problems with anyone if that is what you want to do but not for me I'm afraid.

Have a coupla friends who wear no jewellery or watches, have friends who are liberally sprinkled with Tats, piercings, chains etc! I'm somewhere in the middle with two tattoos on me arm (Chinese dragon at top, flames on forearm), plans for more on remaining limbs, maybe more and I have one remaining nipple bar. Funnily, took out me earrings when going through interviews for current job and have never put them back!

Had the left ear pierced when I was 17 and again around 2 years ago (aged 41) but have now left it out again. I do like women with sleepers in their nose though ;)
