I am somewhat confused by the platform changes for the new May 2019 timetable. Yesterday, the 08.13 GWR service to Reading arrived platform 5, today it was platform 8 - the usual platform.

The 17.44 GWR service to Reading uses platform 8 as before. However, the 17.50 GWR service to Redhill also uses platform 8, instead of 6. Platform 6 is occupied by the 17.53 SWR to Farnham. It used to be 18.00 to Ascot. The 17.54 SWR to Fratton from Platform 4 is extended to portsmouth and leaves platform 2, with an additional service to Haslemere on platform 4.

Now, this is all well and good if trains are on time. But the 17.44 to Reading is notorious for being late, and if it is it will delay the 17.50 to Redhill as they have to use the same platform. I know the 17.50 cannot depart until the 17.44 has arrived, even if they use different platforms, because the share the same track. But having different platforms if they arrive at the same time does make departure of the 17.50 quicker.

The problem at Guildford with the timetable change is that South Western Railway basically block platform 6 all day with Farnham trains. One leaves at 23 and 53 while the next arrives at 28 and 58.

This leaves North Downs line trains with platform 8 (or 4 and 5 if SWR don't need them for a Portsmouth service).

It is up to the signallers to work out what to do when trains run out of course.
