SWT run a class 159 ECS from Yeovil Junction - Westbury - Fratton stables overnight and then ECS to Totton before forming the first Totton to Romsey service which extends to Yeovil Junction.
Any other pointless journeys that TOCs operate. ?

I heard that the late evening Cotswold HSTs continue onwards from Hereford to Swansea for servicing, which seems daft as they then have to return to Hereford the next morning.

If there's no traincrew depot at the location in question, it's probably easier to let the crew work forward to a depot location (where the train can be fuelled etc.) than provide a taxi, and not be able to fuel the set etc.

remember that 'ECS' is a staff train, also a Salisbury - Yeovil Junction via westbury runs as a staff train as well

Sets off the HFD services run to St. Phillips Marsh actually. They then run up early in the morning from PM to HFD.

What surprised me a while ago was that such a diagram existed for HST sets to do Swansea passenger services, then in the early morning run ECS to Cheltenham Spa!

Thumpers (more than likely the new things do as well) used to run from Ashford (Kent) to Selhurst via Eastbourne, Lewes and the Brighton Mainline and then return in the morning to start again after Privatisation. Before that the used to run in service from East Croydon to Hastings.

Years ago Virgin used to run a Weymouth to Leeds service as ECS,which seems to be a real waste.

During the Summer, one of the XC HSTs used to do Neville Hill - Weymouth or Manchester ECS run that took under 4 hours.....
