CP - Comboios de Portugal has gone through a lot of changes over the past year.

President Carlos Gomes Nogueira has been replaced by Nuno Freitas, managing director of Nomad Tech and a railway enthusiast member of APAC - Associação Portuguesa de Amigos do Caminho de Ferro.

It has been made public that the old CP 1200 diesel locomotives, built by Brissonneau & Lotz and Sorefame in the 1960's, will be making a comeback as shunter locomotives.

The plan for these SNCF BB63000 clones is to release more working English Electric CP 1400 from their current shunting assignments to become available for Regional and InterRegional services in the North of Portugal, shifting the Spanish 592 DMU's down to the Oeste line, and the Portuguese CP 0450 DMU's down to Alentejo and Algarve.

Old second generation Sorefame passenger cars will also be refurbished as general purpose cars to be used on InterCity, Regional and InterRegional services, and the first prototype should be presented and tested later this year or earlier next year.

Next week 13 Schindler cars and 4 CP 2600 will be shipped around.
The four CP 2600 will join the already functioning Nr. 2601 in Contumil for refurbishment.
The eleven Schindler cars will meet up with two additional Schindler in Contumil and shipped to Guifões, also for refurbishment.

Timetable is as follows:

31301 - 22 Oct - 4x2600 + 11xSchindler (LOC 5600)
Entroncamento 23:06 - Contumil 05:30
45min stop at Pampilhosa

31303 - 23 Oct - 13x Schindler (2x LOC 1400 top 'n tail)
Contumil 09:01 - Guifões 09:20

Max speed: 60km/h

The revived Nr. 2601

This sounds really positive - how solid do we think the gen is about extra work for 1400s? (I don't know CP well but have the impression that in the past, expected positive things haven't happened - but to be fair unexpected ones have happened instead!)

Thanks!

As far as I know the eventual fleet of 19 Schindler cars will be hauled by English Electrics exclusively (as we currently don't have any other diesel loco's for passengers).
The French class 1200 are supposed to liberate current shunting class 1400 for mainline use.

Additional 30 old 2nd Gen Sorefame cars will be refurbished for operation at min. 160km/h paired with the class 2600.

There's also negotiations with SNCF to buy 10 used Corail driving trailers from them to (finally) introduce push-pull operations in Portugal.
If trials go well, an additional fleet of 10 Sorefame cars will be in-house converted to driving trailers.

From my estimates, the 10 existing SNCF Corail driving trailers will be for InterCity operations at 200km/h with CP 5600, while the subsequent 10 CP Sorefame driving trailers will be adapted to operate at 160km/h with CP 2600.

Thanks for the gen... can I be expected to book a trip to North Portugal in 18 months' time then for some English electric action? 8-)

The Corail driving trailers seem sensible, I wonder how much conversion work is required? Seems a very quick win, because SNCF are hardly short of Corail vehicles with various schemes to replace them and already several rakes on depots without turning a wheel in the last few years in places like Vilenueve-Saint-Georges.

It’s been reported (on FB) that 1805 has been shunted out at Entroncamento and will be moving to Barreiro shortly. Fingers crossed they get it running and find something for it to do...

Nr. 1805 hasn't got anywhere yet. The Barreiro workshops await its arrival for maintenance, but the National Railway Museum is being particularly laggard at the moment.

Another photo of the Schindler at the Guifões workshops. The place is being currently reequipped and the first cars set to return to service are the two ***** coloured ones, being the ones in better overall condition and have bourrelets already installed.

Thanks, but what's a bourrelet?

It's the French name we've adopted for the UIC-561 rubber tube gangways...

Some cars still have the old folding bellows. Those need to be replaced to UIC-561 standards but that requires a gangway extension to be installed.

Just a quick update:

The class 1200's seem to have been dropped in favour of additional EE's. I'm still trying to get confirmation over this matter.

Meanwhile, today marked the day when Nr. 2601 returned to the mainline on her own self after 9 years in reserve:

I tried to get my own footage, but had an appointment during those trials...

All Intercity trains and a few Douro/Minho InterRegionals departing from Porto-Campanhã.

And that's it. For now at least.
There isn't an online website that has that information. We either have an insider on the Traction Depot Department, or look in advance for signs that a IR train will be made with EE 1400.

ATM if it's from PS Bento, it's a unit (a RENFE 592, refurbished or unrefurbished).

Because the loco needs to shunt around to the opposite end, they rather replace regionals starting from Campanhã than the option of sending two locos, one at each end, to São Bento.

By the way, sorry for the double reply, but there's also news I still haven't shared:

CP - Comboios de Portugal will also advance in the preservation of a narrow gauge fleet of 5 steam locomotives and 4 Italian "Neapolitan" passenger coaches.
3 of the locomotives, Nr. E201, E208 and E213 will be used as monuments, of which E201 has already been brought to the Contumil workshops and is bound for Ermesinde, Valongo.
The remaining 2, Nr. E162 and the giant E143 Mikado, which are in the best shape, will be brought back to Steam and join Nr. E214 on the Vouga Line, together with the coaches.

The company is also scouting the network for rolling stock that can be repurposed for touristic and museology ends.

At the same time, Nr. E214 was revived last week and let to roll on its own for the first time in almost 20 years. Rumors tell the train will run during the Winter as a Christmas Historical Train.

Some great news on this thread, thanks for the updates
I have to say 2601 looks absolutely stunning in that photo, a fantastic livery on one of my favourite looking locos, the broken noses.

It's a pity that E214 and the other locos don't carry the distinctive pair of number plates formerly attached to the chimney. It was around 1973 that the CP started removing them, presumably to prevent collectors helping themselves.
