A friend was challenged at Wigan Wallgate using the return portion of a Preston (PRE) - Liverpool (LIV) CDR return ticket and was told his ticket was not valid as there were direct services from Lime Str. via Wigan North Western to Preston. (He had started his return journey short at Kirkdale, changed at Kirkby (Merseyside) for Wigan Wallgate to walk to Wigan NW for a northbound service to Preston - & ultimately Scotland.

What are the valid routes from PRE to LIV. I'm not that familiar with these routes.

TIA,

I would ask "Oh, does your company follow the National Rail Conditions of Carriage?"

If no, look at the back of the ticket and ask if the wording is incorrect.

If yes, ask "What does it say about the route you can take?"

If they say they are defined in the Routeing Guide, you then ask what routes are permitted. If they do not know then they are undermining their position.

If they say they don't know, then you ask them to look it up.

Was the customer incorrectly charged? If so I'd definitely complain and ask if suitable training will be given and ask for a date by which the training will be completed.

You can go via Ormskirk, Kirkby (Merseyside) or St Helens Central. These are the most obvious ones. Not sure if there's any more for that route.

No, he stood his ground and was "Let off this time". Not sure if it was Northern staff or G4S. This incident happened a few weeks back but he has been using that route back home on many other occasions with no incidents.

In fact he used that route yesterday so I'll ask how he got on. The rest of the group returned via Warrington (WAC & WBQ) as there were engineering works on the Huyton route.

Wigan Wallgate has G4S; I'm completely unsurprised to hear this.

Just to confirm:

http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 49

Liverpool Stations are members of the Liverpool Group.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 36

Routeing permissions for Preston-Liverpool are: CP, NW+ML, NW+NL and WG.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 786

NW+NL allows:
NW: Preston-Wigan Group
ML: Wigan Group-Kirkby-Liverpool Group
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf pages 85 and 74

There are several other routes permitted.

Quite surpised G4S at Wigan Wallgate were actually checking tickets, the last three times I have been there they were just standing around.
