Passengers are interested in not being freezing cold and wet by horizontal rain, and Preston does not have a proper concourse nor enough waiting facilities to avoid this happening when busy and in bad weather.

Mind you Crewe has an overall roof and you still get cold and wet.

It is a listed building. What passengers want is of no importance, though I would suggest quite a lot of passengers want to stay dry when waiting for a train.

there is a debate to be had regarding form over function on the railway. a lot of cash does get spent on aesthetics and imaging and as pointed out does it help the trains run on time. if you look at how much is spent on retaining heritage features and the massive costs associated with maintaining the Victorian fabric of the railway an argument could be made that going to basic structures is more cost effective. For me losing the last vestiges or grandeur would reduce the railways in the eyes of the travelling public and we would end up with a pretty bland network.

Severe weather? just had a quick check on the Met Office site and the maximum wind gust recorded over the last 24hrs was about 20mph, hardly a hurricane. Considering Storm Brendan is expected to deliver 75mph gusts soon they better get it fixed pronto!

Re wind and severe weather.
The Isle of Man 0845 Douglas to Heysham ferry was cancelled - and also the return.
2 Stena Line roundtrips Belfast to Cairnryan around midday were cancelled.
A new Stena ferry on its first trip from Holyhead (dep about 11.00) to Dublin was reported as having trouble entering Dublin due to the winds.
