I'm not sure what you can do in that circumstance then. I'd probably ask the barrier staff to be let through if the ticket office was refusing to sell me a Priv ticket.

The ticket office staff was the same person manning the barriers, as is custom at LU stations (and now it would be the same person, just on the concourse) and they would not let me through without buying a ticket or using an Oyster!

Of course, they may be more inclined to let us through now there is no ticket office. Or I should have just kept my mouth shut and shown my staff pass and claimed I was travelling on Great Northern ;)

My mother always called it "Quarter Fare".

:D

I've also been known to ask for a "PT Day Return to xxx".

The options are endless - but I've never heard, or used, Q-anything!

Now that is old school I guess. Never knew what it meant though.

Heard it used a few times recently in ScotRail-land. "So you want a PT single, eh? I'll see you when I get back."

Lots of TfL PTAC holders here ask for PT tickets - presumably either as that is what their card says ;) or one place the old custom has held on, as they haven't used the trains for a long time and still think that is the most up to date phrase? Who knows :P

Hi.

Sorry to re open an old thread but it's the closest one I could find to get clarification on a question I need answering please?

I am a newbie to the railways and only recently received my PRIV.

I am wanting to travel from London kings cross to Southend Victoria and return on Saturday ideally using the underground between kings cross and Liverpool Street. Can this be purchased using PRIV discount as it is a journey between two mainline stations with the destination being outside of London?

If this is not valid, what ticket could I purchase that would cover the underground journey between kings cross to Liverpool Street in order to get my train to Southend Victoria? I know I'm looking at ways to save only a few pounds but I am a Yorkshireman!

What is classed as a "London" station in this instance? Anything inside M25?

In which instance?

To keep it simple and basic, generally...

You cannot buy a ticket on PRIV starting at an Underground station.
However you can buy a ticket between any two National Rail stations, and if that ticket has a Maltese Cross (a + in the "route" on the ticket) then you can use the ticket to transfer across London exactly as if you had bought a public rate ticket.
So the obvious option is, to go one stop outside of an Underground station (e.g. Kentish Town - Southend via Thameslink to St P, then Underground to Liv St, then from there by Greater Anglia) and then your ticket will have the route "+ ANY PERMITTED" which will work the Underground gates and be perfectly fine for travel.

In short...

Yes.
A Kentish Town - Southend ticket would be fine. :)
