Barnetby would be best for freight probably.

For pubs, Huddersfield and York have them in the station, there are probably many others with pubs nearby.

Wylam has a great Real Ale pub next to the station.

The Mallard at Worksop station, the rovers most southernly station is a cracking little pub and very handy as many connections are quite long and boring there. Be advised that trains in both directions throughout the majority of the day cross here so there can often be an hour wait between trains that are permitted on the North East Rover unless you plan to get there when there's an extra one to Sheffield, or a Saturday one that goes to Cleethorpes, via Barnetby as mentioned above which might be a good move for some freight, although Saturday workings might be different.

The White Horse which is a 5 minute walk from Berwick upon Tweed, the North East Rovers most northernly station and is very pleasant.

Rob - Got 1 day left on my North East Rover tomorrow. up to Berwick again and then got an Advance up to Edinburgh to stay there overnight.

Hartlepool- The Rat Race, on the platform. The 3rd and still one of the best Micropubs :) Newcastle- The Split Chimp- independant bar, always good beer and very friendly, 5 mins from Central.
Durham- The Station House. Gravity beer and Ciders, nice little bar, under the viaduct.
Wylam- As mentioned above, The Boat House. Adjacent to the station.
Whitby- The Station pub. Cracking real ales.
York- York tap- on the station. Loads of ales, usually decent.
