Question to Locomotive 159

Dear all,
anybody an idea, what locomotive this could be? (Pic from ETH Library)



When I was looking around, I found that GSWR had quite similar locomotives (Class 159), especially when it comes to the cab and the bogie with the short wheelbase and large diameter wheels.

e.g. for example here or then this one here:

The tender on my pic looks ruther old fashion, but it seems that there were still built in 1889, when this 0-6-0 locomotive was turned out. It's a North Eastern P class. Pic from Victorian & Edwardain locomotives by D. Baxter, p.80 (Link)



It has also similarities to North British 633 class, but the wheelbase does not fit. Pic from Victorian & Edwardain locomotives by D. Baxter, p.84 (Link)

Well I decided to go digging hard on this one.

I'm 99% sure its a South Eastern Railway A Class locomotive. Its looks like No. 159 was the only member of the class to be photographed as I found this image which looks to be the same loco taken from a similar angle, possibly even the same time and photographer. I also found this model kit catalogue which has an A Class kit for sale and the images look a good match.

Agree its SER 159, James Stirling A class - his first design for the SER following his move from G&SWR, where he had been responsible for some similar locos.
SER 159 built Ashford Works 7/1880, wihdrawn 6/1909
