Well you'll never catch all four services unless you are very dedicated as one of the links gets down to the docks after midnight and returns between 03:00 and 05:00. Not only does the Tara use that small stretch but the IWT liner actually goes further along the road to be unloaded.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotospot.fotopic.net/p60393171.html

Tha Tara is the busiest freight service on the island. Its four return trips a day copmpare to three return trips a week for the DFDS liner between Waterford and Ballina, the same for the timber and two return trips a week for the IWT.

Also, if your shot was taken on Monday well then here is 076 in Balbriggan with the Tara on Monday:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p63523187.html

Was the black and white for dramatic effect or just a failure.

When I said failure I meant like colour failure on the camera.

It's just me trying to do something different. I've one mode set to BW and another mode in colour so as I switch between them I get the different styles.

Mainly a case of me having photographed nearly all the trains many times over so am going for a new effect this week. I think it works well on some shots so may experiment some more with it, though I don't mean manipulating the shots with programs which I don't do.

Hi all,
The ITG railtour tomorrow was supposed to be the farewell to the 141 tour. Alas circumstances have overtaken events and the 141s are not available for the tour. However this evening 078 brought the RPSI Heritage Stock over from Inchicore for the tour and their is a chance it will the tour tomorrow. It's not a 141 but it is in Black and Orange! A shot of 8208 is also in the collection.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Two days worth of updates here. First is from Saturday. The day begins at Ashtown with 078 and the RPSI heritage set on the ITG tour. But then we move away from there to look at the future. Last March we visited the Dunboyne line at the start of the reconstruction, when it was a mud track and bridges were being rebuilt. One year on and we return to the line which should open in the Autumn. Pictures include the stations at Pace, Dunboyne and Hansfield, as well as the bridge over the Royal Canal at Clonsilla, along with track machines 741 and 751 at work on the line. Then the collection moves to City West to see the work on the new Red Line extension to the Luas tram network.

The rest of the shots are taken in Balbriggan today, and are in keeping with Black and White month on Rail Scene Ireland. Shots include two Enterprises, two 2800 DMU sets, 29112 with baby numbers and 080 on the Tara.

Enjoy!

http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1820876_40.html

P.S. 751 appears to be the first train in Ireland with the UIC number:

Hi all,
Some afternoon shots from Dublin Connolly in Black and White showing the various DMUs, DARTs, Enterprise sets, along with 082 and the Enterprise Mark 3 van.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
A small update from Dublin this morning. Main item of interest is 087 on the LWR which had visited the new line at Pace yesterday and was heading back west today, I presume to Portlaoise though may have gone elsewhere. Sadly in one of the shots a blasted 29000 got in the way! :(

Enjoy!

http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1820876_113.html

P.S. It really is 087, it just doesn't like having visible numbers on its body!

Hi all,
Just some shots from today showing NIR C3K sets in Dublin, having run special services from Belfast in connection with the Ireland vs. Wales rugby match.

Enjoy!

I hadn't seen your phots from last weekend. I'm guessing I must have seen you at Connolly on the Friday evening photting 078 on the emcars. The angle from the platform it was on (5 is it?, the "Rosslare" one anyway!) look quite good, I should have come over for that phot aswell perhaps.

Yeah I was on 5 but had to make a dash to 7 to get a quick shot as my train home arrived!

Hi all,
A slightly off-topic collection. Some shots taken in O'Connell Street in Dublin yesterday are now online. The shots were taken before and after the St. Patrick's Day parade, sadly due to work I missed the parade, showing the preparations and the people gathering for the event. There are some shots of Luas trams in the collection to keep the railway theme going.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Today was in some ways a day of unfulfilled possibilities. Some shots taken around Dublin showing 080 and the Tara at North Wall, 076 and the 'muck' train, and 085 on a ballast also at North Wall, also the 3-piece DART set at Fairview along with some shunting at the EMU depot for two DART sets going to Drogheda with a DMU. Also some Luas trams, DMUS and DARTs feature.

Enjoy!

Hi all,
Some shots from yesterday from Dublin city. Day starts in Drumcondra where we see 080 on a LE movement, 071 on the IWT liner, 085 on a ballast and the usual mix of DMUS. Then we move to a location not used very often - Raheny. Bit of a disappointment because the two hours I was there neither of the two scheduled Taras went through, the first time the Tara has let me down. Just some shots of the DART EMUs and Suburban DMUs passing through.

Shots also include orange 087 in Connolly and the latest picture I've ever taken in Connolly.

Enjoy!

After the slight disappointment that was yesterday I returned to the Kildare area today. Things were much better. Also, Enterprise loco, and owned by Northern Ireland Railways, 8208 on a Mark 4 set on the Cork to Dublin run.

Hellfire! Interesting trip back in 2007 too by the looks of things, Fishguard-Cardiff desperately required track. Can't believe you got away with the IRGA headboard.

What started as a five trip to Germany last week, ended up being a ten day pan-European epic voyage, that concluded with four capitals in three days! Locations include Hamburg, Bremen, Hannover, and Berlin (and Paris and Portsmouth!)

Now now be nice.

B142 was stabled at Connolly en route from Inchicore to Whitehead RPSI. The move was cancelled at the last minute (NIR Issue) and the loco then returned to Inchicore.

ALL IE OWNED 141's are restricted to Inchicore Works until further notice.

Starting at Whitehead RPSI Excursion Platform depart 05.20 return 00.15 hrs# - an 18½ hour day!

Surely one of the longest railtour day trips you could manage in Ireland :D

^Indeedy. Didn't help that the engine shut down a few times on the way to and from Belfast, though it appeared to have kept to the times. :)

Hi all,
Spent the last three days in the UK, mostly in London but Portsmouth and Brighton had visits too. Pictures include all three classes of 378s (378/0, 378/1, 378/2), a Southern 313 in Brighton, three GM 66s, many tubes, and a tour along the East London Line.

Though I must admit that for me all of the above paled into insignificance what I got to see the beauty that is 60163 'Tornado' pass through Stratford at some speed, a locomotive which I first got enamoured with twelve years ago. 'Twas a fine sight on Friday:

Nice. The Mark 3 looks good in a set. Did 7604 make the journey up north for repainting like 7608 and 7613 or was she repainted at Inchicore? Can't wait to the whole train up north.

I expect the gangways between the DD and the Mk3 to be connected when they go into service. Can't have the gaurd hopping from van to train at 80mph. :P

Yes I can see that. They've been removed for quite some time. Completely sealed off at the loco end ala refurbished 2700 railcars, and no connection as of yet on the other end, but as I said I expect it to be connected when it goes into service.

Why would you remove the gangway, release the van into traffic and then put back what you took off?

Does not make sense!

Hi all,
A non-railway collection was added today but it is for a special ship. The Cunard vessel Queen Victoria was in Dublin yesterday as part of her round the British Isles cruise. Shots show this magnificent vessel as it departed in the evening:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1876121.html

Truly it was a sight to behold. Now if we could just get the Queen Mary 2 in, though I read that Victoria and Elizabeth are due back in port next year!

*At the time of posting fotopic is acting up and there are some thumbnails missing, but the pictures are there. Hopefully this problem will be sorted soon.

Hi all,
One could ask what is better than seeing a steam loco on the mainline? Well the answer I would give is two steam locos on the mainline! The RPSI ran the steam Enterprise between Belfast and Dublin today. The set came down with 186 and went back with No. 4 and both locos met at Connolly shed:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p66409469.html

Rest of the shots from today can be found below which also include GM diesels 209, 225 and 227 at Connolly and 207 and No. 4 in Balbriggan.

Hi all,
As it is a bit of a quiet period at the moment I'd thought it be as good as time as any to upload my shots from last April's IRRS/Railway Children Mark 3 tour of the Western Railway Corridor. Route was Dublin Connolly to Limerick to Ennis to Athenry to Dublin Connolly. Haulage was 072 and 083 and the star attraction on the day was the brief return of a few Mark 3 carriages.
Although the day was more notable for the IRRS headboard being bent out of shape following impact with a pigeon:

Other highlights include Baby-GM 171 in action, and Enterprise locos 207 and 233 on shed at Connolly. Rest of the shots are here:

Hi all,
A large upload from yesterday is now online with a veritable pot-pourri of choice. The day starts in Connolly with 207, 233 and 171 before moving to Drumcondra to see 225 on the IWT liner. Then a trip down to Dublin Port took place to see 082 on the Tara travelling down Alexandra Road, followed by a spin on the 'Dublin Eye' to get an aerial view of Dublin Port and it's environs. A brief trip to Dalkey and Dun Laoighre took place before spending the evening in Clonsilla to see the new junction and the evening activity. The day was then concluded with a trip back to Dublin Port to see Baby GM 171 and 076 bring the container pocket wagons down and back up Alexandra Road.

All in all a good day was had out.

Pictures are here:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1879745_84.html

Though my luckiest is this one. Check out the signal!

Hi all,
I boldly went where no Csalem had gone before today and visited the Downpatrick and County Down Railway where I experienced my first bit of steam haulage in Ireland. A good visit and trip on the line was had and the pictures can be found here:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1879745_138.html

Although the day was about steam, it was highlight to see MetroVick A39 in the yard:

I did get to see it move about earlier on but no pictures of that alas.

Hi all,

The official opening, or reopening, of the Dunboyne line occurred today. The 7.5km line diverges from the Maynooth line at Clonsilla and currently terminates at M3 Parkway, having passed through Hansfield and Dunboyne. Hansfield will open at a later date.

Eventually it is hoped the line will be extended to Navan. Services run Monday to Friday between M3 Parkway and Docklands, and at weekends from M3 Parkway to Connolly.

Passengers services to Dunboyne ceased in 1947, and all services on the line ceased in 1963.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey, T.D., performed the official opening ceremony today.

Hi all,
After spending the last three years photographing the Tara along the Northern Line and travelling along the tramway in Dublin Port, I finally, finally, made it to Navan to see it on the start of the journey. Only thing left to do is travel the two miles beyond the station and see the train in the actual mine, but can't see that happening! Anyhoo, 088 was on duty today with the first departure from Navan:

Other pictures, including some from Balbriggan can be found at the link below. I suspect that something may have happened to 088, because by 12:30 it had still not gone through Balbriggan, and I was there at 10:30 awaiting it:

Hi all,
The weekend just gone saw the fifth annual Open House weekend in Dublin. The doors were thrown open, allowing the public a chance to visit buildings that are normally private. On Saturday morning I visited Liberty Hall, the headquarters of SIPTU, and more importantly, the tallest building in Dublin City Centre. It allowed the chance to get some unique shots of our city, and some of the railway infrastructure, such as this shot of Fairview DART depot, which was over a mile away:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p67624851.html

Unfortunately, there was some fog in the morning, but thanks to Paint.net I was able to clear a lot of it up from my pictures.

Hi all,
Work continues on reorganising RSI and here is another recreated collection. It is a visit to Kildare on October 12th 2007, when there was such delights as 075 on a Mark 2 rake:

But there are also shots of 201s on Mark3s and Mark 4s, 071s on Mark 2s and Mark 3s (including my first shot of a then newly repainted black/silver 071), the Norfolk liner and 163 and 171 on a track train. Most of these are all gone now, sadly.

Hi all,
Did the monthly visit to Kildare today and it was quite a good one. In the six hours I was there I saw five freight trains. 080 on the empty timber, 075 and 085 on the Norfolk liner and 215 and Orange 084 on the IWT liner. But the highlight was achieving the dream that I only achieved once before, two years ago, and that is getting two freights passing. While 080 waited in the centre road to head west with the empty timber, 084 appeared from the west with the pocket IWT and passed 080. The sequence of shots begins here:

Hi all,
Did a visit to Kildare yesterday which will be my last one for this year I'd imagine. However, it was a good one. Got five 071s, including 084 and 087 in orange, on the empty timber, IWT liner and Norfolk liner, and two light. Also got a series of shots of 215 on the Ballina to North Wall liner passing 084 on the Waterford to Ballina liner, starting here:

Hi all,
This weekend saw the start of the Santa Specials in Dublin run by the RPSI. As I was in UK yesterday I missed the first day but I was out today. The highlight for me was not getting No. 4 (which is always a delight!) but the return of steam heated Cravens to Pearse as seen in this shot:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p68339326.html

Brings back happy memories of growing up on Northern Line, though instead of a steam loco I'd need a 001, 121, 141, 181, 071 or even a GM 201!

http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p68459751.html

However, after I returned to Dublin I decided to pop down to North Wall yard to see what was around when 075, track flats and Donelli 776 snuck up behind me. Perosnally this was a better highlight:

Rest of the shots from today, including 228 on the Cravens and 085 in North Wall, can be found here:

Enjoy!

Forgive the dumb question from a foreigner, but what makes Laughanstown infamous? From the picture it looks like Luas is the only way the get there...?

^I'm referencing the Wanderer who really loves that stop. It is the only way to get there, but then there is nothing there!

Hi all,
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and did not over indulge!

For then fourth year in a row, I now present 2010...A Year In Review

It was an exciting and dramatic year on the Irish Rail network. The Baby GMs bowed out...sort of. 141 and 142 entered preservation with the RPSI, and others with the ITG. Railtours covered a lot of the country bringing a variety of stock to new locations such as Mark 3s to the Western Rail Corridor. New lines opened, such as the WRC and Dunboyne and old ones closed in the form of the South Wexford. The IWT liner increased its services and the other freight flows soldiered on. Snow welcomed in the year and saw it off.
Click below to get the year as witnessed by Rail Scene Ireland:

Enjoy, and thank you for visiting RSI this year!

P.S. On a personal level this was the rail event of the year. What looks better than 112 at the head of the Tara?!

Hi all,
Irish Rail are doing some major engineering work this week on the DART system, replacing slab track with more conventional sleepers and ballast. Some shots taken last Tuesday can be found here:

Hi all,
I upgraded the camera over the weekend so had to pop out yesterday to test it. It also gave me the chance to correct a wrong and finally after four years I've photographed trains in the last station I needed on the railway line between Greystones and Dundalk - Donabate. Here is 082 on the Tara passing through this station on the Northern Line:

Rest of the shots from yesterday, including more from Donabate as well as Malahide, Clontarf Road and Dublin Connolly can be found here:

Hi all,
Did the first trip of the year to Kildare yesterday where I managed to get Intercity 220 on the empty timber:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p68910202.html

Other highlights include 215 on the IWT, 075 passing through light and 079 on a track panel train as well as the usual 22000s. pictures here:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1938596.html

And as a reminder of the changes in Ireland, here is Kildare just under three years ago:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1901483_25.html

Back then 220 was still orange and was hauling Mark 3 sets:

Hi all,
Last month I said I took a dream shot with the double headed Tara. Today, fog notwithstanding, I got the dream shot. Around 14:15 071 on the northbound empty Tara passed 085 on the southbound laden Tara at Skerries and I was there to see it:
http://www.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/p69271481.html

It only took four years to get that shot!

Hi all,
Today saw the launch of Baby-GM 146 into preservation by the Irish Traction Group on the Downpatrick and County Down Railway. Throughout the day 146 was in service along with other ITG loco A39 and the Railbus RB 3. Not everything went to plan which saw some interesting workings such as 146 having to rescue RB 3 and at one point A39 was called out for what seemed to be a failed 146 but the latter repaired itself.

All in all it was an excellent day out. Pictures at link below:
Pictures from the day now up at the...ww.railsceneireland.fotopic.net/c1949105.html
