Field diverts are basically a way of bringing the electrical field down in order to increase the speed.

Usually a locomotive has about 2 or 3 stages of field divert or more commonly I'd presume known as field weakening.

Think of it as the locomotive's multi-speed gearbox, however totally electrical ;)
