Ah, did she some kind of bell that would sound in the cab that had to be rigged up for journey? That's ringing a bell...

Not as complicated as that - and wouldn't need re-fixing whenever there was a change of locomotive (which was at least every time the train went from one railway's domain to another) - but communicating with the driver is the right idea.

All I can think of is a flag that the driver could see somehow?

I think that's near enough. The queen's coach had a signal on top - the disc and bar variety - which was supposed to tell the driver if she wanted to stop (but not to nip behind a hedge - see previous post). She insisted that the train must never exceed 40mph, but the story is that the operators persuaded the royal staff to use it to tell the driver when the queen had gone to sleep, so he could speed up during the night and get there a lot quicker. So I suppose it was both a pain and a benefit!

That was a good one. I feel like I staggered over the line with the tape wrapped around my feet there...

Anyway, a bit more modern and not too difficult.

Without looking in your 1986 Platform 5 books. Which class 33s carried names in 1987? Numbers and names please, numbers and names.

Bit of a clue time, there were five of them at that time and three of them still exist, two preserved and one (although with a different name) with WCRC now I believe...

Well, I can start with 33008 "Eastleigh" and 33052 "Ashford". The others might need more digging.

That's two definitely, they're the two that are preserved. Three to go now.

I thought this'd bit easier than it's turning out to be. We're getting there though. ;)

33008 Eastleigh
330** ?
330** Earl Mountbatten of Burma
33052 Ashford
330** ?

I've put them in the right order to help...

Was Mountbatten 33027? Also wasn't there a Spitfire? Don't know the number though.

Edit: what about Broadlands or was that an ED?

Yes Broadlands was 73142 but I'll update the list with your answers. ;)

33008 Eastleigh
330** Sultan
32027 Earl Mountbatten of Burma
33052 Ashford
330** ?

We're nearly there (the last one shares a word with 33027).

This is fun, aren't we having fun?

Wasn't "Burma Star" one too - no idea which number it carried, though.

Ah. That's the one that I used to find difficult to remember.
Ok with Gus's contribution we have:

33008 Eastleigh
330?? Sultan
33027 Earl Mountbatten of Burma
33052 Ashford
330?? The Burma Star

Lord knows how we're going to work out who's won this?

Well I haven't got a suitable question at the moment Mr C so that definitely rules me out of the running.

What was the wheel arrangement of the last steam locomotive to be built for an Irish railway ?

PS Calthrop - please give others a chance before answering !

Would that be Builleds turf burner 6-6-0 or some new build for a heritage operation?- actually isn't that Ballybunion monorail one just a steam outline diesel?

I'll go for a new build 0-4-2 on the Bushmills railway perhaps?

Did they both get repaired after a major accident? City of Glasgow in H & W and Spitfire in I think the Lewisham disaster.

Sorry - have been out for a couple of days. Yes, absolutely right. 46242 "City of Glasgow" was heading the Perth -Euston sleeper at Harrow and Wealdstone on October 8th 1952. 34066 "Spitfire" the 16:56 Cannon Street to Ramsgate at Lewisham on 4th December 1957. Both were extensively damaged but repaired.
