Hi all,

as you will see Im new to this forum so im not sure if im posting this in the right section?

I work for a company that is looking to establish a maintenance facility in the UK as we currently offer turnkey services, working on the customers site.

Obviously, it would be advantageous to be central and serving multiple lines but Im well aware of how difficult space is to find!

We are looking for either an unused space, a depot thats currently on lease but not fully utilised or a plot of land with track access that we can develop and build on.

If anyone can think of any locations or can point me in the right direction of where to look / who to contact it would be much appreciated!

So far I have been in contact with Network Rail but its difficult to find the right people to speak to.

Many Thanks,

Shane.

Please do something with Exmouth Junction!! Once a huge shed, now just some overgrown sidings and a complete mess! Seems such a waste of good railway land.. Not really central tho!!

There are a few areas of disused railway land in the midlands i would suggest looking there first. Not sure how many are earmarked for development i know of two that are to be part of HS2.

I have carried out location strategies in the past and where you do not have access to accurate data then Google maps is your friend (once you have identified outline locations).

For example, much of Tyne Yard at the south end is empty space now and would be ideal for building a facility. There is no point going to Network Rail's property arm without some ideas of possible locations.

Other possibilities are industrial sites such as TATA steel locations which have been slimmed down or former coal facilities

The next stage for you is to define what you need, where it needs to be in terms of characteristics and then you can go looking.

Let me know if I can be of help.

Thanks.

We mainly undertake refurbishment, installation and C6 works so we are looking for 3-4 roads and we will install jacks and painting facilities. However, over time I would hope that the portfolio of services we offer would expand into heavier work and include C4 work.

Loads of room for another shed here, this once bustling depot is a mere shadow of its past - right next to WCML. Looks after track equipment now.

There is land around Sheffield in the Tinsley of Sheffield area you may want to consider, good access too, although check the route of HS2 against it.
Derby may have some land where the old train works are.

I could possibly get you some contact numbers/names too as a few friends work at what's left of the depot.

Have the empty former silverlink depot at Bletchley, it's wired and will soon become a important depot again, and is next to the WCML.
Or even try the diesel depot at Crewe which has stood redundant for many years.

Hi

Ex-BR railway depot-Mantle lane at Coalville in Leics or the old Leicester depot next to the station still might retain a shed.

Still has the land where depot stood according to google sat nav map. (Coalville)

Just updating again but National Power had a depot at Ferrybridge, west yorkshire with a purpose built shed for maintenance, last time i knew it was just storing wheelsets and the shed not in use (2010). Location is opposite the power station off Kirkshaw lane @ Ferrybridge. Just googled the site it has quite a few roads into a head shunt. Showing Loco's on their but i think there in storage by the looks of it. This depot was took over by DB schenker i think but it's not operational?
Some other Forum members on here might be able to enlighten you,

Cheers

You'd need to remove all the Class 60s from inside Crewe DMD, along with 58022 which is outside and Riviera Trains use Crewe DMD to store/stable their coaches and 47s so no chance of getting Crewe DMD
Thanks, Sam

I think Wigan Springs Branch is earmarked as a depot as part of the Northern Hub project - pretty much any spare space in the Northwest is already being looked at as part of this enormous project.

Crewe Diesel Depot formerly run by EWS is a huge area with excellent track access and Crewe is a good rail hub.

Hi

Another location comes to mind.......The ex-diesel depot @ Buxton, just located to the side of the station. Googlemaps still showing the shed on site.

Cheers

Another vote for the old Tinsley marshalling yard. In Sheffield, so really close to the MML and not far from the ECML.

Tursdale, a few miles south of Durham. The former coal board workshops alongside the ECML which are underused and although there is currently no direct access, it wouldn't be hard to put access in as the former leamside line is directly alongside.

There is also vast space either side of the main line immediately north of Darlington station and along the bishop auckland branch/whessoe road

York has extensive sidings and former train manufacture and maintenance facilities that could be re activated. An advantage here is the ability to hire people who may have worked for thrall Europa or ABB or BREL who may retain experience or trained specialist skills.

Thornaby yard and the space left by demolition of the former depot. I understand some of this land has been sold for development, but it may be worth a look to see what is still available there

Last time I looked the depot was still connected to the network but its location might count against it as it's not particularly central. I would have suggested Leicester but I think that's now back in use.

Yeah, Buxton is a bit out the way, but could be a cheaper option.

Depends on what sort of cash the company has to splash and where the main clients are based.

You often see rail companies build new depots and then end up expanding by building additional maintenance roads.

A firm involved in overhauls needs storage space so perhaps the firm is maybe looking for a big fan of sidings as well or good depths in road lengths.

Be interesting to find out a bit more about the set up from Shane.

Cheers

Between the parallel lines
If you'd like a site in the South of England, have a look at the largely disused yards South of Redhill Station. The access to the yard on the Southwest side is unfortunately likely to be partially or wholly severed by NR's "Redhill Platform Zero" project, but there is still room elsewhere. You will likely need to contact both NR and DBS. The reason that I mention this is that the site is occasionally still used, but perhaps even so offers an overlooked opportunity.

Redhill is an area of third-rail electrification, so it could be seen that this is a disadvantage, plus freight/ECS/loco paths can be limited during the day.

The yards can relatively easily be accessed overnight from the Tonbridge/Ashford areas, the Brighton Mainline and even (if clearance permits) the Reading area. The BML can, in turn, be accessed from the West London Line, etc.

Due to the proximity of the land to Redhill Town Centre, you may need to be very careful with its use, but significant regeneration and employment opportunities are needed in the area. At the moment, the land itself is an eyesore.

What's happened to the Adtranz half of Doncaster works since they demolished the buildings? Has it been built on or is it still vacant? It's a pity they demolished the Crimpsall Shop in 2008.

Beware the South Yorkshire locals though. When Network Rail wanted to build a new maintenance depot on vacant railway land at Beighton, bringing much needed jobs to the area, NIMBY locals objected and the plan was withdrawn.
