A good report, I love London, always so much to do. On keeping costs down, why don`t you use the hostels, especially if you are like me, up and out early and late back at night. I recently stayed in the Safestay hostel at Holland Park, Kensington, a nice area and great hostel, part of a chain I use across Europe, £11 to £15 for a night and a 5 minutes walk from Holland Park underground station, very central.
Have used hostels in the past, and enjoyed them, but fancied a bit more comfort this time. Will bear the Holland Park one in mind, though.

23/12/2018 - London Day 3

Less luck with the phonechargers this morning as duds 707019/008 were on the early train from Feltham to Clapham Junction. Better luck here, though, as winner 378203 was sitting waiting to take me up to Kensington Olympia. I'd been here before, but never used the tube station, so it being Sunday I corrected this - and cleared the District Line shacks - by catching a winning S8 pair to Earls Court, followed by more winners to Sloane Square (chosen for the change because I'd not been since the eighties) and then a dud pair round to Liverpool Street.

Here, I went shack scratching - sadly all 315 dud today. 801 took me up to Highams Park, which has handy shops and an ATM, then back to Walthamstow Central; 315802 then took me to Wood Street to meet 315815 back to James Street. Here, I was hungry, so wandered into Walthamstow and found an excellent cooked breakfast at Jesse’s Cafe. Wandering back to the station, I spotted a suitable bus, so headed north and east through the remains of the bottom end of Epping Forest on the 275, eventually alighting at Woodford Underground.

From here, the mission was to complete the Central Line shacks, four being required. First visit was to Grange Hill - safer in the school holidays - then back to Roding Valley, which is a weird and deserted place but had a newsagents. Then through to Barkingside, appropriately accompanied on the train by a very handsome and dignified bulldog, being taken for an outing in his Christmas Jumper. Time for a pnb here (the Central Line is very convenient in this respect) before heading on to my last Central Line shack at Wanstead, then on to Holborn. (Four separate trains were used on the CL, with a pleasing 14/16 winners).

An awkward change here (seemed a long way through the subways) and the LU clearance mission was on its last leg. Firstly I went North, stepping back one service at Caledonian Road to clear the shack, as far as Turnpike Lane, for a smoke break. Then back south, stepping back at Arsenal and then finally completing the LU at Russell Square (5 out of 8 winners on the Piccadilly).

Upstairs here, a look at the map outside the station, then a pleasant 10 minute stroll back to Euston. Here, I visited Upper Crust for supplies, then joined winners 350267/350373 (the latter being detached at Northampton) for the long ride home. This was enlivened by the PA system constantly asking people to phone BTP if they spot anything wrong, being followed by the PIS announcing “next stop Long Buckby” all the way back to Crewe. I was tempted… :)

From Crewe it was straightforward. A can of cider on 175110 took me to Manchester Piccadilly, two “required as that particular pair” metrolink doubles across to Victoria, then, appropriately in their last full year of service, comfy pacer 142015 up to Rochdale and Tram 75 down to the Town Centre to end 2018 on rail for me.

I enjoyed the three days - next time down there I'll concentrate on the Southern, I think - still need a few of their lines so might have me a day save...

Ouchie on the 350/2 to Crewe, with an added kick in the teeth with the far more suitable 350/3 getting detached at Northampton.

Good work on clearing LU for stations as well

Happy new year, folks.

Inspired by 55013 on his thread, here's my current state of play for things had in the past. Looking at it, the number one target for a swift class-clearance is 322484. As South Elmsall is a required shack, a small excursion to Yorkshire could kill two birds with one stone...

It's been a slow start to 2019 for me.

Apart from an out and back trip to Manchester on the tram, my first rail action of the year was on Friday 22/2 when I had a trip to the death place of King Richard II, in order to cadge a lift to the death place of King Richard III. 158752 did the honours to Todmorden, 150142 to Brighouse and then 180103 provided comfort and wifi as far as Pontefract Monkhill.

30 hours later, after two quizzes, a visit to Bosworth Battlefield, a visit to the nice glassware gallery at Shenton station on the Battlefield line, and time spent in the Herculean Revived in Sutton Cheney, one of the nicest pubs I've ever visited, I was deposited at Batley station by my friend, and looking to go home.

However, I'd just missed the hourly Rochdale train. Never, mind, I can get a WYDR and go via Leeds. So I boarded 150110 for the short trip - and arrived next to very-much-required 322484, which was just departing for Bradford!

I'll have that, I thought to myself, so boarded a pair of 158 on the following Carlisle train to intercept the 322 at Shipley. And unexpectedly struck the jam mine - 158906 was thoroughly dud, but it's pal 158786, complete with saltire, was very much required! So off to Shipley we went.

Here, I lurked waiting for my prey and eventually 322484 appeared, heading for Ilkley. Having not been there since 2005, I decided on the full trip, clearing the 322 iN a modicum of style.

The rest was a slight anticlimax - 333009 in to Leeds and 158909 home to Rochdale.

A good first trip of the year; like Tech, the embers of redpennery are smouldering!

Nice trip out to my old neck of the woods (ish). Very interesting about the Hercules Revived. Was an occasional dining venue of mine and the ex-beloved back in the 80's, the local railway interest at the time being at the Rectory in the neighbouring village.

Nice work on clearing the 322s, and is 158786 ScotRail-ified inside or still with its old SWT interior?
It had lost its SWT interior a good few years into its life across the border, using ex-Arriva seats still with their Arriva moquette. Don't know if that got replaced before they left Scotrail though.
A nice stroke of luck with the Scottish outcasts this week, two more red lines in the book ain't a bad thing.

A nice little move in my local area.
I need 57786 for a ride in, so I'm hoping it drops on my daily commute :)

I've been looking at your list and am impressed by the fact you had an 82 and an 83, I never managed to sample either class (although I saw most of them).
Your 81 numbers put mine to shame as well.

Teddy Boston, presumably. Mate and fellow clergyman of Wilbert Awdry, whose brother was the founding secretary of the Richard III restoration-of-reputation-as-non-nephew-killer Society...

Thanks. The 81s were mostly scored on ned leaps around Birmingham in 84/5/6. 82002 and 83013 were both thrown out by Longsight for Sunday ADEXes. I also recall seeing a photo years ago of 84001 on an ADEX which I was probably on, but didn't record the haulage at the time. Not claiming it yet, but I still occasionally trawl the interweb for corroboration!

Ah yes I remember those Chapman (I think) seats from way too much time on Wessex Trains days, not to mention a LOT of time on ATW pre-175s up and down the Marches. Hard to believe it's well over 11 years (maybe 13 this year) since the 175s came to South Wales, I remember running at Cardiff for my first of the type on my stomping grounds! I also have a memory of what I believe was 175004 on a leap from Piccadilly to Salford Crescent in early 2004, the date escapes me. I do remember the destination label in the windows though!

Sorry, that was one heck of a trip down Memory Lane there! Thanks for the clarification on 158786, I can't now remember if it was that one or 158789 I had on my 2011 ALR (ooh, more nostalgia...) to Alloa which still had SWT FC seats, quite an odd sight I do definitely remember at Haymarket!

Not done much so far this month. Just a trip to Padgate for a quiz. Nice to revisit a station for a normal* reason, rather than just "because it's there".

However, I have a week off work starting on 25/3, so a spot of trip planning has been in order. I'm "busy" (quizzing again) Friday and Saturday, but am tempted by an East Midlands Rover on Monday to Wednesday. I do need the bits of track from Lincoln to Barnetby, and Oakham to Kettering. Now I could access the Ranger area via returns to New Mills, but am wondering if anyone has any accommodation recommendations within the Rover area? (Am half tempted by Skeg Vegas :) )

*Quizzers are mostly normal...

I'm trying to remember the name of the hotel I stayed in a couple years ago which was a stones throw from Beeston station as that was quite reasonable as a place to base yourself.

Could be the Fairhaven or the Hylands or the Grove Guest House? All shown as close to Beeston station on booking.com (other sites are available)

The Victoria pub is actually next to the station but doesn't seem to do B&B. A good selection of beer and food though and you can sit outside under cover and watch stuff stopping and passing through. Pity they have locked the gate onto the Nottingham bound platform though - you have to go over the adjacent footbridge and walk back to the station. :frown:

Fairhaven looks to be the one I stayed in for a week back in 2016

East Midlands Day 1 (Monday 25th).

Made a later than planned start, so decided to abandon the 3 Day Rover idea in favour of Day tickets. A Spoons breakfast in Rochdale and a walk up to the station resulted in my first pacers of the year, with 142030/051 rattling me speedily to Manchester Victoria. A trip round the bend followed, to Piccadilly on 185147, then a cheeky winner in 150104 as far as Stockport, with 185124 on the Cleethorpes service following up to Sheffield.

A nice winning 222003 was then taken to Sheffield, where a Doncaster to Toton special I'd noticed on RTT proved to be 66019 dragging 60087, presumably for repair. 158866/773 then forwarded me to Nottingham, where I acquired a Robin Hood runabout ticket.

First move was to score a shack, with 156473 doing the honours out to Bulwell. I hoped for one of my two winning trams to turn up, but 'twas dud 231 back as far as Basford, (noting required 212 heading the otber way) whilst a second spin on the wheel produced dud 234 back to the station.

Nothing here was a winner, so I went back upstairs to nail the tram, with 212 taken one stop to Queens Walk, dud 229 returning me whence I came.

Time for another shack now, and 156413 took me through to Attenborough, where I missed the +1 back. Never mind, I watched 37610 storm through light engine, then wandered up to the bus stop for a trip to Beeston and booking in at the Fairhaven.

Mmm, 37 thrash...

I could have done that new chord recently, but chose to do Metrolink between Picc and Viccy for nearly half the price instead!

25/3/19 (continued).

After booking in, dropping my bag off at my room and 30 minutes chilling, I wandered back to Beeston station. Dud Meridian 220013 took me back into Nottingham, then dud 156497 took me out to a shack score at Carlton. 45 or so minutes here, but the adjacent pub is a friendly place, with Monday afternoon being some sort of locals social, so I passed the time watching a hard fought game of doubles at pool.

Back to the station, and a pair of dud doggies in 153326/368 returned me to Nottingham. The next Beeston train was also a pair, and although 153311 was dud (Bidston to Wrexham, of all things), 153321 became my first winner for a while. Still time to sneak in another move before the football (on the telly), and dud 222021 led winner 222023 back to Nottingham, for 170110 back to Beeston again, where I called it quits for the day, picked up some grub from the co-op and retired to the hotel to watch the match.

A decent day; would Derbyshire be fruitful on the morrow??

I was expecting to see something like "after arriving at Carlton I made my way along the street to board at Netherfield" (or vice versa) ;)

I think the downside of Beeston now is the services towards Nottingham tend to be grouped together (whereas before they had a reasonable spread across the hour)

26/03/2019 - Derbyshire day

Today's ticket was a Derbyshire Wayfarer, with handy Beeston add - on. First priority after getting my ticket was an excellent sausage cob and coffee from the shop at the station. Then 170104 purred in, and I set off westward, noting 08417, 08588 and 73962 at Derby, where the train reversed for the short trip to a new shack at Willington.

I had about 40 minutes here, so had a walk down to the canal, where I watched a narrowboat reverse in the winding pool. A lovely spot, worth revisiting. Then back to the station, and 170117 to Derby, to connect with 156404 for a trip up the Matlock Branch as far as Cromford - which was cold, wet and out of town - and the same unit back to Ambergate.

This was also quite lonely, albeit nearer the main road, so the wait was passed working out where the old triangular formation was. Then 156405 appeared to take me up to Matlock Bath.

I was now quite hungry, so visited the “Whistlestop Cafe” hut there were no fried green tomatoes on view so I settled on a bar of free trade, ethically sourced and quite possibly transgender chocolate to sustain me for the trip back through Derby, to the undelights of Spondon.

Unlike Willington, there's nothing to entertain visitors here, the canal being closed and the remains of the winding pool being occupied by a bull - terrier being shouted at to get out by its owner. 47727 and 47749 did, however, provide some shiny blue entertainment passing through, before dudboxen 153383/311 appeared to trundle me back to Derby, where a spot of shunting on the stabling point had enabled identification of 37714.

So far, there had been a distinct lack of winners, however this was corrected by my next move, to Uttoxeter on 153374. Late lunch was sourced here at the local Spoons, then back to the station for dud 153376 back to Derby.

Time for a change here, and a bit of mainline action. Winner 43055 led 43059 in taking me up to Chesterfield, for another winner back in 222020. Third winner in a row was 153385 for a trip out to my last new shack of the day at Tutbury & Hatton, one or both of which may be nice by daylight, before 158858 appeared in the gloom to return me to Derby.

Deja vu now as, repeating it's feat from 24 hours earlier, 170110 was my final train of the day back to Beeston, at the end of a decent day out.
