Mention of the 07.33 Crewe-Manchester has made me think that Class 46 D172 Ixion worked this train on one occasion as well.

That was 19th Feb 2000 - I know because I was on it (top & tail with 47709)

cant remember what year it was, but must have been about 2000/2001, a problem occured on brighton main line, so sussex scot was diverted via west coast way via barnham, havant and eastleigh, and was worked from brighton to preston park by the 09 from lovers walk, with 47 on rear so on arrival at preston park train could run along the west coastway

I know D9000 worked S&C diversions in 99, though I dont remember D9016 working, plus it was out of action for a while after it had an exhaust fire in December 1999 and didnt return until late 2001/early 2002.

I am 90% sure I saw it on the run, looking through my photo albums I don't seem to have a picture of it, but my dad would have snapped it if it had, so next time I'm round there I will have a trawl through and find the picture.

 Found the photo, it was D9000....

9000 also worked the 20:02 Peterborough to Crewe mail train (1xTPO and 1xBG) as far as Derby in 1971 (IIRC) and the return working. I had a similar reaction as I passed that at Syston, on an eastbound service.

Before that it was a class 25 turn. The teatime loco-hauled from Leicester used to work across with 2x25 (and 4xMk Is), one went back on the 20:27 (?) service train and the other worked the Crewe mail. That changed in about 1972, when the Leicester became a unit and the loco off one of the King's Cross terminators (at Peterborough) took the Crewe mail forward.
