As you're probably aware strike action means that Scotrail aren't running (m)any services on Sundays, but I came across this rather random service - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:M61105/2021-07-04/detailed#allox_id=0. Interesting that it runs into every platform at Aberdeen and Dundee, and also Thornton loop that doesn't see much use in normal Scotrail service (that I can remember).

Is it likely to be driver training or some other purpose?

Edit: Looked again and there's a weekday Kirkcaldy to Perth ECS that uses Thornton North passenger loop.

I have seen a very similar thing happen in Manchester where they were using a video camera to record all arrivals and departures of all platforms, possibly for training purposes. Could be a similar thing going on here, however I’m only speculating!

I saw a tweet from scotrail showing a 5-car HST out testing platform stopping points etc. Perhaps this is the working on RTT?

A plausible guess though. :)

Hmm... RTT lists it as a 170 but I guess that could be a possibility.

It’s route proving due to the poor weather forecast and the lack of passenger services due to the strike. There have been a number of other route proving empties today all over Scotland.

Maybe the forecast was worse than the actual weather but we've barely had a drop of rain and no high winds at all to speak of. Certainly nothing that would require route proving.

What's the logic behind route proving today during the daytime? Surely if there was a forecast of bad weather today then the route proving should be done before service starts tomorrow?
