For those that way inclined, here's the thread where you can record this year's winning locos, units and trams - those you have ridden in, on or behind for the first time.

***********

1/1/13 - a GM Rail Ranger produced Centro exiles 150103/111/114/132 plus pendy 390050.

66103 and 66154 were my first 2 new locos of 2013, on today's UK Railtours trip to High Marnham and Tinsley.

Since I've not yet given up my interest in the rail scene (long story, I was considering it, and still was during my first bash of 2013 to be fair, but my reasons for doing so have gone by the wayside), let's get 2013's red pen thread going!

Same as in 2012, post what winners you've had for haulage in 2013. Let's see how I did on my Cheshire Day Ranger...

1st January 2013 - never started a year's bashing on New Year's Day!

323223
323234
323236
323232
507025
507033

Didn't get a winner 221 after all as Virgin were running a very much non-normal service on the WCML. No doubt my two winners stormed past me at some point whilst hopping about between Crewe and Stockport. Didn't get any winners on 2nd January 2013 either. Looks like I'm gonna have to spend a lot of time festering at Crewe, and I don't know when I last did that!

Only 2 more 323s to get now too (224, 237) in order to finally clear the class! Merseyrail were running a Sunday service on NYD, so not much got in the book after all.

You obviously weren't on the two tours that I have had 66103 on previously then  (BLS Aire & Ribble Pioneer on 25th June 2005 and UK Railtours The Alloa Phoenix on 25th September 2008). It now has the dubious distinction of being my highest mileage "shed".

I did score 66154 though which should keep me ticking over until my next trip abroad shortly though am tempted to go and see if 67010 is out on Tuesday.

'Red pen' is a colloquial phrase which has been in use for many years by those who go out to bash/score new locos (and units etc) for haulage, and it refers to getting a new/required loco (or whatever) for haulage. It stems from the days when everyone used to use a red pen to underline their haulages in a Platform 5 pocket book or similar. Quite why 90% of people used a red pen for this purpose rather than any other colour, I'm not too sure.

So you only underline locos that you have travelled behind, or locos you see?

In this instance it's locos you've travelled behind. In reality I don't think many people actually underline them these days, I store all my loco moves in an Excel Spreadsheet (and Railmiles).

Ok thanks. It would be a bit hard nowadays considering there are only a few trains that are loco hauled, like GA and the sleepers. Do Hst's count?

I underline my stuff still in my NREA :) Also use RailMiles but I like having my separate moves book and spotting books :)

As for why it was a red pen I dunno, but I still call it that despite using a black pen normally

Oh, and I did look in this sub-sector of the forum for the relevant thread but didn't find it, hence starting my own. Should have used the Search function...

It's not the easiest of hobbies and it does require some dedication. I managed to get 39 new locos for haulage last year (see post at http://www.railforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1321530&postcount=205). With the exception of Class 66s, where I have a 'take it or leave it' attitude, if a loco I need for haulage works, there's a good chance I'll be there for it.

No longer in London
My red pen has already had its first few airings in 2013 and hopefully there are many more to come in the rest of 2013. The dark winter days are not too much of an encouragement to venture far from the relative warmth of the capital so for the next few months I will probably be looking mainly at London area "red pens".
So far we have scored
Wednesday January 2nd
S-8: 21075/76, 21095/96
1996 tube stock: 96041/126
Thursday 3rd January
S-8: 21057/58, 21069/70
1996 tube stock: 96036/111
Saturday January 5th
My first outing to the DLR this year saw me score no less than 32 different but with another 86 sets still needed, there's a few more trips needed to that part of London. The 32 sets comprised
25, 27
31, 32
54
64, 68, 69
70, 74
82, 85
91, 95, 97
101, 102, 108
110, 118
126
130, 133, 134, 138
140, 143, 144, 149
151, 154, 155

The wants list is still quite long and it would take ages to list out so heres a summary. 243 sets of Transport for London stock - tube, sub surface, DLR and Tramplink. 710 units off the national network made up of 35 pacers, 365 bogie DMUs and 310 EMUs. And I need virually all of the stock from the regional tram/light rail networks apart from older Blackpool trams. It would certainly be good to drive massive hole in to TfL stock and I would also like to see how many of the 35 required pacers I can eliminate this year. Other than that, I will be happy with whatever comes along!

Depends on whether you count HST's as locos.........

can-of-worms-1.jpg

Anyway, most others on here count units (I don't, and that includes HST power cars, but that is my personal choice). It is all down to what you personally want to "bash", so there are no set rules other than you have to have ridden behind it or in it :)

I think my first couple of days of the year have gone quite well!

Finally making progress on Northern's 3 car 158s with 158752 and 158756, plus picked up a couple of EMT 158s in 158846 and 158852.

Penultimate TPE 170 was 170301, and finally got 180113 which completes a TOC (even if it is HT ).

Also:
91113
185130
220033

I do 'Red Pen' pretty much anything that runs on rails. I only list locos in this thread though as they more noteworthy and I'll tend to go more out of my way to get them.

Thanks, I rolled up for the 08:45 ex Marylebone this morning and 10 was on that, sorted :D
Winner no. 3 for 2013 is likely to be a Belgian class 18 (might as well scratch a few of those in now that we have an extra hour to kill in Brussels next week)

I don't normally bother adding units to this section, unless they are significant or possibly of interest to people. Today's score was LEV1 (RDB975874) at the Wensleydale Railway. If anyone else wants a trip on it, then it will be on Leeming Bar-Bedale bus replacement shuttles over the next two days - see the green box at http://www.wensleydalerailway.com/ for more information.
