I've just got a model in OO gauge of a Red Star parcels van (picture of the model [not mine] attched). did these vans ever actually exist in real life? if so, where/ when were they used?

I think that Hornby model is a fictitious creation (Although I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong). Red Star Parcels was the, well, parcels delivery arm of BR, and to my knowledge made use of mark 1 BG vans the same as the rest of the parcels traffic.

Hornby started bringing out ficticious rolling stock for a while in the 90s - many of these are now the Railroad range of starter sets.
