Artemis Intelligent Power, Ricardo and Bombardier Transportation are doing a joint research project to test mechanical regenerative braking through flywheels on DMU in the UK. First tests will be in the lab with a Bombardier running wheel using a Artemis hydraulic pump motor and Ricardo flywheel with a second stage if successful testing it on an existing DMU (doesnt say what class they will be testing it on). Energy saving expected is in the 10-20% range and it could give a range of options from straight fuel saving to using the power to provide an extra boost to increase performance like on Formula 1 cars, possibly giving greater hill climbing performance or faster acceleration allowing better timings to be timetabled than the original class was capable of.
