Every couple of months or so I like to travel from Staines to Dorchester to visit family, but as I'm rarely in a hurry I like to take my time and stop off at other interesting places. I normally buy an off-peak return (route not via London)with an Annual Gold Card discount.

The question is - what routes can I take? I've tried 'interrogating' the national rail enquires journey planner, but it's not always clear.

In particular can I travel via Clapham Junction?
Can I travel via Yeovil Junction / Pen Mill to Dorchester West?
And is via Brighton a permitted route?
And what about via Salisbury - Romsey - Southampton Central?

I'd be extremely grateful for any advice on this, as I'm not sure of any other reliable way of finding this information out (the routing guide on the ATOC website didn't look terribly user-friendly but maybe it is just me!).

I'm in the middle of the Solent currently so can't check the routing guide.

You do have obviously Basingstoke - Southampton - Dorchester.

Possibly Basingstoke - Salisbury the Yeovils.

Eastleigh - Romesy - Southampton Central could well be valid.

I would be surprised if there is anything outside the suburban network.

Without going via London I can only see it being valid via Clapham Jn and Southampton Airport Parkway or Clapham Jn and Westbury - I can't see via Romsey being valid anywhere.

Note only the former route via the SWML is valid on a Gold Card discount :)

You wouldn't be permitted to go via Westbury if the ticket is Gold Card-discounted.

The shortest route from Staines to Dorchester Stations is to Dorchester South.

Staines is a Routeing Point and Dorchester South/West is a member of Weymouth Group.

The following are permitted routes:
  • Direct trains from Staines to Dorchester South/West, of which there is none.
  • Shortest Route: 126.75 miles
    • Staines
    • Egham
    • Virginia Water
    • Chertsey
    • Addlestone
    • Weybridge
    • Woking
    • Basingstoke
    • Winchester
    • Eastleigh
    • Southampton Central
    • Brockenhurst
    • Bournemouth
    • Poole
    • Wareham (Dorset)
    • Dorchester South
  • Mapped Routes:
    Staines - WEYMOUTH GROUP:
    • WW
    • WX
    • WX + WE: This one gives permission via Westbury, however you may not take that route if the ticket has a Gold Card discount on it as Westbury is outside the Network area.

Salisbury - Southampton Central via Romsey does not appear to be on a permitted route unless there is an easement somewhere I have missed. Same applies to Brighton.

You are valid by:
a) direct trains - there are none
b) the shortest route - this is: Staines-Virginia Water-Chertsey-Woking-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Southampton-Bournemouth-Dorchester South
c) By routes shown in the National Routeing Guide, available at: http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide
These are calculated as follows:
Staines is a routeing point.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 68

Both Dorchester stations are members of the Weymouth Group.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 19

Routeing permissions for Staines-Weymouth Group are as follows: LONDON, WW, WX, and WX+WE.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 910

As your ticket is routed 'Not London' we can discount the London routeing permission.

WW gives:
Staines-Cherstey-Woking-Brockwood-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Eastleigh-Southampton-Weymouth Group (a duplicate of the shortest route)
Staines-Cherstey-Weybridge-Woking-Brockwood-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Eastleigh-Southampton-Weymouth Group
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 122

WX gives:
Staines-Feltham-Twickenham-Richmond-Barnes-Clapham Junction-Wimbledon-Surbiton-Woking-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Eastleigh-Southampton-Weymouth Group
Staines-Feltham-Hounslow-Barnes-Clapham Junction-Wimbledon-Surbiton-Woking-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Eastleigh-Southampton-Weymouth Group
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 123

WX+WE gives:
WX: Staines-Feltham-Twickenham-Richmond-Barnes-Clapham Junction-Wimbledon-Surbiton-Woking-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Salisbury-Westbury
WE: Westbury-Castle Cary-Yetminster-Weymouth Group

WX: Staines-Feltham-Hounslow-Barnes-Clapham Junction-Wimbledon-Surbiton-Woking-Farnborough-Basingstoke-Salisbury-Westbury
WE: Westbury-Castle Cary-Yetminster-Weymouth Group

WX: Staines-Ascot-Wokingham-Reading
WE: Reading-Newbury-Westbury-Castle Cary-Yetminster-Weymouth Group
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf pages 114 & 123

Note that those routes generates by maps WX & WE, ie those going via Westbury, Castle Cary and Yetminster, are not permitted with a Gold Card discounted ticket as they leave the network area.

Your proposed route via Salisbury, Romsey and Southampton is not permitted.

I can see no reason why Yeovil would not be a permitted route though as it is inside the network area and clearly permitted by this set of maps.
Unless I am missing something obvious, the section between Salisbury and Yeovil is not shown on any of the maps indicated by the routeing permissions.

Clapham Jn is permitted on map WX. I agree with you on Romsey and Brighton.

Yes, for some reason I had two sets of maps open and was looking at the wrong one. Now corrected.
