Can you use RTVs as payment towards a Disabled Persons Railcard? I see no reason why not given that for other railcards which you can get from a booking office, it is possible to pay using an RTV. So I am wondering if it would be possible in this case if a postal application is made for the renewal enclosing the RTVs and any remaining monies due paid by cheque.

Not sure I understand this sentence - can you not by a railcard with RTVs at the booking office?

You cannot buy a disabled person's railcard at a booking office. You have to send off and apply for it. I suspect this rules out RTVs as a payment method out.

Ah, okay. I didn't get that from the quoted sentence. Not sure that it rules out RTVs though as you can use them to buy tickets from telesales, provided you leave enough time to post them in and for them to post the tickets back out.

I tried to buy a Network Railcard with an RTV once and was refused. That was at Luton Airport Parkway.

I have just emailed Disabled Persons Railcard to ask if they can accept RTVs as part payment towards a railcard renewal if it is done by post using the paper application form and the remainder paid by cheque. I notice on the form one of the payment options is "warrant" so I am hopeful. I also noticed the email address is "@atoc.org" so I would be very surprised if ATOC of all people could not process an RTV.

I would ask, but not sure. A passenger said they asked about buying a 3-year Railcard online with RTVs and was refused, but for a Disabled Persons Railcard your mileage may vary as there is no station-issued equivalent!

Sorry I have corrected it.

That is an error on their part. There is no reason that transaction couldn't have been completed using an RTV as part payment.

Thank you for your email about using a Rail Travel Voucher as part payment for a Railcard.

I'm sorry to advise that we are not able to accept a Rail Travel Voucher as a payment method for Disabled Persons Railcards. They can only be used at stations against the cost of National Rail tickets.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this but please let us know should you have any further enquiries.

Kind regards,

Erm..... "They can only be used at stations against the cost of National Rail tickets."

That's not true. A booking office can accept a RTV as payment towards a railcard!

Since the back of the RTV says "as full or part payment for travel", I think strictly speaking you are out of luck, unless one can find something to suggest the contrary in contractual terms.

That said, I have never been refused payment using an RTV at stations towards the cost of a Railcard, but that may be down to discretion.

Perfectly valid for payment for Railcards, but I'd guess online Railcard issues don't go through LENNON like station, Telesales and Travel Agency issues, hence why they're not set up to handle RTVs.

Rail Travel Voucher, the compensation/Delay Repay/complain loud enough and we'll give you something to go away (depending on which TOC) ;)

If it's cry baby rail they just throw RTVs at you!! I got a nice £50 one from them for just putting a complaint in...
