From what I can work out there's been a train trapped on the down slow outside Rugeley and one in the branch platform since first thing this morning. Must be fairly serious problems.

Damaged OHLE according to NRE, disruption until 1600.
Virgin mostly diverting via West Midlands, though some Manchester trains appear to be running on the normal route.
LNWR diverting via Birmingham, and not running Hednesford-Rugeley either.
https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/today.aspx
Damage to the overhead electric wires in the Rugeley Trent Valley area is resulting in fewer lines being available for trains to run on. We anticipate that disruption will continue until 16:00

PS From RTT, it appears southbound is open at Rugeley, but not northbound.
Everything now very disrupted as northbound trains aren't making their planned turnrounds further north, with cancellations and trains turning short.

Yes, the one time I am heading north to visit family by train it all goes tits up. What a surprise, not.

The Virgin train manager is clearly doing his best. He was frustrated earlier when hearing there were 10 staff further up the train sitting around doing nothing (I think 1st class had been declassified), so he had to help find seats for passengers and move cases on his own.

Currently trundling through Birmingham at no more than 40 mph. Not enough power for all the trains being diverted through the Midlands. 86 minutes late into Manchester.

Fortunately I don't have to do long distance journeys very often, so this sort of piss-take, either by road or rail, only has to be suffered a few times a year.

I'm glad to say that this disruption was well communicated.
"Virgin Trains Alerting Service" email sent at 06:47 informing me of cancellations
National Rail service alterations telling me of the effect on services (that the "xx:50" Manchester-London services were cancelled, a slight error but I correctly took this to mean xx:55, in other words the ones via Wilmslow)
I was able to inform Bob, my friend, when we met for breakfast at 09:30 that his 11:11 to London was cancelled and that he could use his ticket via Crewe or Stockport for other trains. In the end he went via Crewe and caught a Liverpool-London train running about an hour late.
Up Slow at Rugeley appears to have been in use either from the start or from early enough.
Down services still (15:20) diverting via Bescot.
Probably going to be unpleasant at Euston for a while on a Friday afternoon.

Wires were down Stafford to norton bridge on the down fast this morning. Since repaired.

Complete loss of signalling at rugeley since early hours. Up slow not affected. Multiple track circuit failures, point machines with no power and some ohle damage. 2U19 abandoned on the down slow and a unit in the branch platform. I think the unit needs moving to test the tracks before handing back. Nothing through on either lines since 0700 northbound, all via Aston and bescot or new street if booked.

Main line reported reopened at 18:25 and trains showing passing through, which means that they must have been allowed to use the Trent Valley route north of Rugby since 18:00 or so. Branch line may still be blocked.

Bob reported that Euston was unusually busy when he arrived shortly after 1pm.
Thanks to the information I was able to relay to him he left Wilmslow slightly earlier than planned and arrived in London around the time he had originally hoped.

8E7323A2-61BC-49A0-BF88-D962D0524914.jpeg I was on that trapped unit, 0616 off Lichfield Trent Valley to Crewe. We came to a stand at about 0622, half a mile south of Rugeley TV. At about 0750 we were detrained through the front set of doors via a ladder, then escorted along the down fast line to the station. Pendo’s were passing us on the up slow at reduced speed, presumably ex Manchester-Euston, travelling via Stone and Colwich Jct. Two minibuses arrived at about 0830 to take the 20 or so passengers to Stafford.
