Reading the way this thread has gone it almost feels as if walking and using public transport would be worth a forum of its own.

That could be quite a good and certainly useful idea. During the current lockdown I have had to return to using my car resulting in me having to plan circular walks where I can return to my car. I usually find walks incorporating public transport so much more flexible when you can finish at a different location.
Most of my travel by both bus and train is leisure travel and my regular holidays in the UK usually involve using rail and bus day and weekly tickets, visiting lots of interesting locations and including lots of walking.
