The S&DRHT at Midsomer Norton have received planning permission to extend rails south towards Chilcompton.

The permission enables double tracks to the limit of BANES (Bath and North East Somerset) territory and will bring the Trust to within about 1/3 of a mile of Chilcompton cutting.

More information on the Trust website. Associated documents are also viewable on the BANES planning site.

It's great they're doing the whole thing double track, but that must cost a bomb in terms of rail and sleepers.

Although the permission is for double track, the intention is to extend a single line towards Chilcompton (to a halt with run-around just north of the in-filled cutting). Space and permission for a second line will provide much needed siding space in the shorter term.

At present, there's just under 1/2 mile of double track approaching completion, this acts as a large run-around for the station at Midsomer.

wow that is good news
I was chatting to one of our members this weekend about the project who was a young fireman on the S and D towards the end and on the Highbury branch
He recounted how the steep tunnels south of Bath used to cause issues with crews with the smoke and locos slipping to a stand inside
I used to vist a customers Cheese site at Emborough at the top of Masbury summit in the 80s and dream of seeing a steam loco banking up there again but pick a day whne there is nop low cloud:roll:
Maybe one day:)
Good luck with the project
