I've just tried this on the Southern website, and apparently it is valid both via Chandlers Ford or Southampton Central.

It is the Portsmouth Harbour service from Salisbury, changing at Romsey (15 minute wait) according to the aforementioned website.

Perhaps somebody who is local to that area may also be able to confirm if that is the case or not?

So if travelling from Salisbury to Chandlers Ford it would be better to buy a single from Salisbury to Southampton Airport Parkway than a Salisbury to Chandlers Ford single

Yes, that is a simple way to undercut that fare, and one that works even better for Eastleigh.

It seems to be due to the fact the fares are set by different operators.
