Hi Guys,

If anyone here is interested in supporting the preservation of the last remaining Mark 1 Slam-Door EMU's, then you are more than welcome to head over to our site.

The Save The CIGs Group is a serious specialist project in which we aim to preserve the last remaining 4-CIG units (including the last VEP!), and ensure they take their place in railway heritage for future generations to marvel at.

In addition to the new site which contains a whole host of information about our project, we have a new forum, plus you can join us online by filling in our application form. For those who wish to support us, you can make a donation online (which you will not be charged a fee for).

Want to beat the scrap dealer? Please, Save The CIGs.

Hi,

It'll be on Ex-BRB land next to East Croydon station, that is our preferred site.

More details of the site and what exactly will be on it is posted on our forum, as this has been asked of us before ;)

I'll join it as East Croydon isnt to far from Clapham Junction where I would have to change from Basingstoke, provided SWT havent sacked me by then....

Small update, did the Shoeburyness visit today, the units seem to have survived open air storage for god knows how long, and are in pretty good shape overall. Apart from the usual water damage on some seats, and the odd door missing! The shoegear has even been left in the guards van!

Seriously, one thing we will need to invest in is a bloody hoover!...Spent most of the visit being fouled by HUGE cobwebs lol

You can read up on todays events, in full, over on our forum;

In my opinion the EMU you should aim for is 3417 instead of the 421s on the Lymington branch. My reason for this is that the 421s have been messed about with inside a bit.

Hi Guys,

There are reasons for attempting to save the units we say that we will;

They ARE the last ones..i've been over MoD Shoeburyness, there aren't anymore left apart from two odd VEP trailers...all the rest of them have been cut up.

1304 is the last remaining "Greyhound" CIG, which obviously is of relevence to the history of these units. (With original TSO)

3536 is the last remaining VEP, and for those of you who are aware, it ran in the center of SWT's last slam door tour on May 26th 05.

We may aswell go for the four sets, (1881 and 1884 included) as the MoD express the urge to send them for scrapping at some stage soon. I'd say if our group does not make a bid for them, they will get rid of them, and in my view that would be a criminal waste of our heritage.

The GCR CIG was originally a BIG, converted by replacing its buffet car with a CEP TSO.

All ours are original CIG units ;)

Thats good :)

The SWT CIGs never looked too good with that CEP TSO, totally different body design, just looked out of place in a CIG.

Theres a work party at Coventry railway centre tomorrow and Sunday, to do the ground work needed to release the BIG buffet car so that it can goto the GCR to join 1393, why not come along and help out?
The site is located on the perimeter of Coventry airport, next to the air museum

One thing.
The site located is earmarked for a stadium!
There are already 1392, 1393, 1399, 1499 and 1753 saved from the CIG/BIG family, not counting the two Lymington units, plus 3822 and 3417 are both either saved or earmarked for saving from the vep/vap/vup/whatever - class 423 - family.
IMHO it might be a better idea to rob the Shoeburyness units for parts to keep those units going. 1392 and 1499 have been vandalised and 1399 has had the spray can vandals visit TWO coaches this time [It was one last time], so why not join the DFR and offer to work on their CIGs, that way you will be saving them.

Saving them from slowly rotting away!

Only 1393 is in operable condition at the GCR, and that could do with some work, which is being organised I understand...

The other one is being looked after, but at an airfield in Suffolk!

I am not against saving more CIGs, don't get me wrong, but first of all, find a location that you have had checked out first, and then go for it.

As a big SR fan it pains me to say this but.......

I believe an ex departmental 309 is sitting in Shoeburyness awaiting fate plus maybe one or two 312's (the last units to be built with slam doors??).

As neither class have any surviving members in preservation I would be looking at these rather than more CIG's or VEP's. We have already lost the 302's to the scrap man as well as most of the 310's not to mention the 305's (last slam door units in Scotland??) and many, many others.

Just glad that people had the foresight to preserve the 1st gen DMU's which were hated by many a enthusiast until they were on the way out.

That said, good luck to anyone who goes forth and preserves

There are two departmental 309s, quite a few 310s and a couple of carriages of a 312

The 309s are not going anywhere, Angel are waiting to see if anyone can use them further.
The 310s are full of asbestos and preservation would be of a shel badly cut about.
The 312 coaches are owned by a fire brigade [not sure which one], so goodness knows what they will look like after they have finished with them.

This only leaves the 309s. They 'may have residual white asbestos' sealed in, which could be a stumbling block, and for conversion back from departmental use, will need seating etc. this is close enough to Intercity 70 seating [only minus the armrests] found in some HSTs and until recently, the CEPs.

Hope this is of interest?

Not quite, Tom.
At Mangapps near Burnham on Crouch, Essex there are a couple of 302 DT coaches back to back, and these are used fairly regularly.
