Hi all
I'm a volunteer on the Settle Carlisle line so I thought I'd create this thread to post all various images from the line on here for people to see who either would love to travel the line but cant for whatever reasons, or for the people who like to see 'behind the scenes' if you like - what goes on behind closed doors.

This thread will feature various types of images - some with trains in, some of the scenery and some of the staff and volunteers hard at work. Anyway, to kick things off, here is a selection of photos taken from the last two and a bit years...

Mallerstang Summer 2015 (1 of 1).jpg Mallerstang Edge in Summer 2015. This is located between Garsdale and Kirkby Stephen.

156484 Skipton (1 of 1).jpg 156484 at Skipton. There was severe disruption on services into Leeds due to flooding at Kirkstall. As a result 2 156s worked down from Carlisle on the first train. It also brought a number of spare crew with it to work other services as Leeds crews didn't sign 156s and were stuck on the wrong side of the floods.
Viaduct Shadow (1 of 1).jpg
The shadow of Ribblehead viaduct taken early 2016. Due to the low sun during the winter months you get this spectacular silhouette on Batty Moss below.
Helwith Bridge (1 of 1).jpg
The scene around Helwith Bridge, near Horton-In-Ribblesdale. The river runs parallel with the railway for a short time, before crossing underneath us by the pub 'Helwith Bridge Inn'. Pen-y-Ghent can be seen in the distance
Pen-Y-Ghent limestone (1 of 1).jpg
Further up the line near a small hamlet called Selside, just south of Ribblehead, the railway begins to reach the moors. Dotted all over these moors are limestone pavements, as seen in this image. Pen-Y-Ghent is in the background and the river Ribble is running through the middle of the image.
158843 Settle (1 of 1).jpg
158843 is seen departing Settle for Carlisle. All of the stations are looked after by volunteers such as the flowers and woodwork like benches. I and a couple of others look after Settle station.
Snowy Ingleborough (1 of 1).jpg
A snowy Ingleborough seen on a beautiful winters day. This is the standard view from Ribblehead station.

Thats all for now, but I'll continue to upload more images as I sort through them.

Anthony

Incredible views, I was lucky enough to get to do this line last weekend (and have a number of times in the past). Certainly one of my favourite places to travel through by rail in the world, and i have been to a lot!

Some lovely photos there. This forum could do with a 'like' button. Or is there one somewhere?

A few more photos from the collection that I've sorted out tonight. Once I eventually transfer the photos from my phone onto my laptop then there will be a steady stream of photos appearing on here. Anyway, here you are...

Arten Gill (1 of 1).jpg The magnificent 117ft high Arten Gill viaduct, about half way along the section of line from Blea Moor tunnel and Dent station
DentHead (1 of 1).jpg Dent Head viaduct in the foreground with Dent station just about visible in the background near the top of the photo towards the right. This is the valley of Dentdale, which I think is probably the best view of the line (when its actually possible to see it all!). The closer to Dent station you get, the better the view gets.
Roses (1 of 1).jpg 158796 is seen arriving at Settle with the 1404 Carlisle-Leeds service. The bed of roses in the foreground was done by us as a tribute to the previous gardener of 12 years, Eric Stanley, who sadly passed away last April. His ashes have been burried underneath the roses. Even though he has departed, his spirit hasn't and its as if he's still there watching the world go by!...
Snowy Pen-Y-Ghent (1 of 1).jpg Pen-Y-Ghent seen with a dusting of snow on it in March 2016, taken from the approach to Horton-In-Ribblesdale station.
Wrapped Car (1 of 1).jpg
The result of an April Fools day prank we did on 'Station Master' Paul, whilst there was a break in services and it was quiet. He still hasn't forgiven us for this and we're still waiting in suspense to see whats coming!
Behind this amazing railway is a small team of professional nutcases who, through our own stupidity, entertain the passengers on a daily basis and keep the service going as best we can...well, when I'm not breaking everything that is!

Hope you all enjoy this series of photos and hopefully I'll have plenty more to come fairly soon!
All the best to everyone!

Here are three from yesterday with one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen!image.jpeg
158851 waits time at Settle after arriving early with 1E23 1634 to Leeds.image.jpeg The absolutely stunning sunset seen over Settle station about 30 seconds before the train arrived.image.jpeg I took this one as soon as I came out of the ticket office and saw it. It was certainly one not to be missed!

There will probably be plenty more like this for the next 3-4 months, with the low winter sun setting whilst I'm about the line!

Some beautiful scenes there. I can imagine I'm sat on the train with a cup of tea and a tub of ice cream, rather than stuck in the office !

Love the picture of the viaduct shadow on the first post, amazing shot.

Surprising to see the 156s on the line too, certainly been a while since they were regulars on the route. Looking forward to more pictures.

Thank you!
Do you remember the flooding at Kirkstall around Christmas 2015? Because all of the 158s and crew were stuck on the Leeds side of it, northern brought two 156s down from Carlisle along with spare Carlisle crews to operate the service.

One from today...spot the waterfall being blown back into the air on Mallerstang...

Wow! It's been a while since I've been able to ride the S&C (too long, I know!), and I forgot just how beautiful it is! Brilliant pictures, well done! :D

Here's one from yesterday...
158787 stands at a dark and foggy Settle awaiting time with the early running 1506 Carlisle - Leeds. Certainly was a very eerie scene!

Here are two photos I took on Thursday afternoon at Ribblehead for the next batch of postcards I’m having done.
The first one is the afternoon ‘express’ service heading south towards Leeds at approximately 1620 and the second one is the evening stopper to Carlisle about 15 minutes earlier at 1605.

Thanks!
I have a selection of photos made into postcards to sell on the train...photos of my own that I think will be popular to our travellers and tourists!
I also do other things like canvases, greetings cards etc upon request of any passengers too!

Here’s some photos from around Dent Station. Decided to stay in the self-catering accommodation as it’s up for sale and it may be the last chance I got to stay there! Enjoy

Some beautiful scenes there. I particularly like the one of the Milky Way at Dent. Reminds me of a few spectacular night skies from the platform at Ribblehead, although I've not spotted Mars yet !

More lovely shots.

Those new FGW units are certainly livening things up. Not sure what people will make of 150s on the S&C though, I hope that is not a permanent thing.

The first train of the day that same day was formed of a 142 + 158. 142 attached at Carlisle because the 158 had a failed engine.

I only know that because the bloody thing woke me up squealing to a stop!

One of my favourite ones I’ve taken recently, and that’s the sunset through one of the old fashioned gas lamps at Settle station.

I’m also slowly beginning to get a Facebook page set up for my photography, including a small shop section.
I’d appreciate it if you’d take a minute to come and have a look at my page!

I’ve been working some 12 hour shifts this week over at my workplace DCC Concepts, which allowed me to pop out and get some pictures of trains coming through Settle station. Here’s two of them...
