Scotland to mark Centenary of First World War troop train disaster in 2015

The worst rail disaster in UK history will be remembered as part of Scotland's First World War Centenary commemorations in 2015.

More than 200 soldiers of the Royal Scots, on their way to fight at Gallipoli, were killed in a collision between three trains near Gretna, in May 1915.

The 100th anniversary of the tragedy will be marked on May 22nd and 23rd 2015, with events in both Gretna and the Edinburgh district of Leith where the troops are buried.

The Scottish Government says the cities of Stirling and Dundee have also been chosen to host Centenary commemorations this year of First World War events....

There is a programme about it on BBC4 on Thursday 21 at 2100.

Neil Oliver explores the series of mistakes that may have caused the collision and the part played by the train companies and the Government, and determines whether the investigation would have come to the same conclusions if it were carried out today.

Dramatised reconstructions add to this compelling account of a tragedy which had a profound effect on several communities in Scotland and remains the deadliest in the annals of Britain’s railways.

The prospect of Neil Oliver and dramatised reconstructions is not very appealing.
