Aren't the 385's supposed to multiple with the existing 380's. Has this been tried?
K

They can couple up to class 334 and 380 for emergency purposes to get a unit dragged off the main line but cannot work in multiple as they use different software.

Have the 334s been fitted with Dellner couplers then? I thought they were still Tightlock?

Do they need an adaptor coupling as I'd heard the coupler pocket was a different height to the others?

No idea on that, but it wouldnt surprise me if that's the case. Although I'm sure the 334 Dellner fitment was brought about due to the imminent 385 introduction as it would be the only other Scotrail EMU in the Waverley area that could recover it if no other 385 was available.

IIRC there were also reliability problems with the existing Tightlock couplers. Also, the 334s weren't compatible with the BR EMUs anyway, so there was no loss of utility in switching to Dellners.

There was a huge drop in the quality of the in cab CCTV through the tightlock coupler. Great picture on the leading unit but very poor on the trailing one.

I'm sure I read somewhere the original special called for multiple operation with 380. Perhaps it's been dropped.

The 385 Rescue and Recovery Manual indicates that 380/385 can couple mechanically but requires a schraeder hose; 334/385 can couple mechanically but require a schraeder hose and the gathering horns to be removed on both units due to the electrical box being mounted below the 334 coupling, rather than above as on the 380s & 385s. Class 385s can't be electrically coupled to any other class of unit, and require the electrical boxes to be isolated.

That's 103 now completed inside and out, ahead of its journey North next week.

I'd be careful lifting photos off Yammer if I were you...

I'd be careful even mentioning Yammer on here as it's full of grassing staff members out to make a name for themselves - usually at the expense of the driving grade.
Although to be fair any pics of the 385s are usually tweeted by the social media team after they've been added to Yammer.

Do you know what day next week 103 is coming north?
Guessing will be hauled to either Millerhill/Craigentinney or Mossend.

Is the plan then for 102 to go south for fitting out?

Another Japanese built 385 started arriving at Aycliffe yesterday (offloaded today) 385033 (444033). Does anyone know how many are being built in Japan...? I was told it was 14 and if that’s correct then this is the 14th but it’s out of sequence with the last one that arrived, that one being 031..!

Since it has a class 1 headcode and is shown with stops then more likely a late additional service rather than a training run.

It appears not to have passenger stops though, these are shown in bold, as demonstrated by this working at the same station:

That linked working is all non-bold, which you only tend to get on non-passenger stops (such as when a train calls at the staff halt just outside of Victoria).

Standard seating looks good.

Having spent half an hour in the First Class seats on a Class 800 (they're the same as Class 800 standard) these units join the Class 350/1 in having Standard more comfortable than First.
