Looking somewhat into the future, does anyone have an idea of how long it will take to get the 17 ‘fifth coach’ Mk3’s once the last 4-coach set is delivered? I assume the TS coaches are the ‘easiest’ to refurb (no buffet, accesible toilet etc)?

At the rate they're churning the refurb coaches out now (about one set every 3 weeks), they should be able to do this in about 3 months assuming it's 17 coaches. Although from what I understand, all sets are now due to be strengthened to 5 coaches. Assuming that's the case, we'd be looking at about 20 weeks.

If they switched up to using TGS vehicles, they would theoretically be even easier to refurb as you would only have 2 doors to replace per vehicle and it would help address the lack of bike storage, but I'm not sure if that would have knock-on impacts on things like door control as this is obviously done elsewhere right now.

With the HSTs now in the fleet, will this allow strengthening of other EMU services.
Most likely planned for May tt change but will obviously delayed - would this see the Edinburgh / Glasgow to Aberdeen / Inverness move to fully HST operation.

Hopefully the 5th car enhancements happen and can be quickly done

The sets are being renumbered from today to match the numbers of the 40xxx vehicles. So 40626 is now HA26 etc.

That's my platform 5 book out of date then!
I assume this is to allow easy identification of the sets for staff?

It was always the plan but Wabtec delivered the vehicles in the wrong order apparently and the numbering of the classic sets clashed. Now they've gone the refurbs have gained their correct numbers.

Thanks for that info.
I'd just lost track of the number of refurbs there are now.
Does anyone know the extent to which progress is possible in the current situation?
I like to hope there could be a few more by summer and that it will be possible for normality to be mostly restored. Each delivery is good news, but the list does remind me that we are only around halfway towards the full number of (4-car) sets.

As far as things returning to "normality" by this summer is concerned, I suspect the number of HSTs available is pretty far down the list of things that will determine whether that is in any way likely to occur.

Absolutely.
Apologies if the comment could have been interpreted as "putting the cart before the horse". There will be plenty of serious issues to think about for quite some time ahead of what is primarily curiosity.

Doing a little digging around for tit-bit info and found two small things.

1) Wabtec Doncaster still working

2) Kilmarnock were to do up to 26 mk3 coaches, starting a year ago.
That number suggests this is where the 5th coach for each set was coming from? Difficult to get timelines right but after there was a pause in production after set 3/4 (I think) then the Kilmarnock work was announced and we did rumour that Scotrail committed to 5 for all sets.
Not sure where that leaves things because that works is closing. However, it could suggest that it will close once this work is complete. Anyone know if anything has been complete from Kilmarnock?

The first vehicle converted at Kilmarnock was in the original HA16 delivered a few months back. There have been several more since.

I assume that it's cancelled - hasn't left. I guess another STP will appear.

It's been cancelled due to an excluded reason (PL). Never seen that before. Anyone able to explain?

Whatever the reason, it's now rescheduled for Thursday at the same time.
