So what advantage do the short HSTs have over a TPE 185 style refurb of the 170s?
All, or some of them, are planned on being lengthened to 2+5, allowing ScotRail to operate them at 125mph if they want too.

Capacity and comfort, the idea was to cut some stops, provide improved on-board service not to increase linespeed afaiaa

Agree with that. Plus, the extra power offered by 2 Power Cars over the 3 underfloor engines on the 170s allows for greater acceleration and some timetable improvements. It's certainly more noticeable on the Highland Mainline coming out of Inverness for example!

That's how I understood it as well, using the better acceleration and cutting some stops to shorten journey times. You might get similar acceleration off 185s but without the additional seating capacity.

They found passengers much prefered taking the HST Highland Chieftain over their DMU services, so are attempting to emulate the full intercity travelling environment rather than at best regional express style 170s.

Are they still operating any slam-door sets or has the derogation for them now expired?

ScotRail's safety case is for 100 max
ScotRail isn't operating the cross-border stock movements, but rather some FOC. I forget which. So ScotRail's safety-case isn't relevant there.

They were viewed by the scoring to provide a better customer experience, a larger number of seats, and considerably better acceleration.

All remaining slam door sets are now in storage, with 2 now at Slateford. 1 Has had interior fittings removed to provide spares for the main ScotRail fleet.

Rail Operations Group / ROG usually carries out these moves for ScotRail.

43183 was one of the two P/C's that headed south today (can't remember the other), the pair had a slight fault on Platform 1 at Waverley as well.

In that case assuming the FOC has a safety case for over 100mph then linespeed would be the maximum for the movements

Does anyone have a list of the 42xxx TS vehicles at either Ely or Doncaster that are either stored for ScotRail or in the process of being rebuilt with new doors? Thanks

There’s a list in the current Rail Express.

the other big advantage is not having doors in the centre of the coaches and the blast of freezing cold air at every station for 11.5 months of the year.
