Hi all

Reported on another forum that the 20th set is already formed up at Wabtec so the next delivery should be imminent. Formation reported as:

HA13- 43139 40613 42279 42280 42296 43177

Hope this helps
Paul

Didn't realise that there were already another pair of power cars at Wabtec.

Looks like after a short delay, they are getting on with things at last. We could be on for 3 sets within a week hopefully!
I doubt it. Power cars are usually in Doncaster for at least two weeks before returning with their set. Need to check that everything works together.

Set 20 at Doncaster already formed (post # 11943), the power cars for this set went south about 3 weeks ago so they should hopefully go north in the next few days or so, it's the power cars going south today for set 21 which will be going back north in about 2 or so weeks time. Whether in practice this will happen though....

That's why I was doubting three sets within a week or so. Two is very possible.

Seen a picture on Twitter of a fully formed set at Doncaster looking ready to go. Was on one yesterday and have to say this is a massive upgrade if you are doing a return journey to the central belt from Inverness.
Great product just need to crack on and finish the job.

I can’t help but feel that 5-coach sets would be pretty useful at the moment. With the first class coach completely closed off to passengers and the number of people travelling going up, that’s a lot of space not going to use (though I know it’s meant for staff travellers). Since even now we’re not seeing all the HST sets in service at one time, could it be possible to temporarily create five-coach sets from the 4-cars not being used? (Unlikely I know, but possible?)

Also, is there any word on catering return to ScotRail? Perhaps buffet only with Perspex screens like Avanti or with passengers called by coach like LNER?

How often were the buffet counters used on Scotrail HSTs?

By passengers? I have a feeling the answer is not too often. But I think it’s fair to consider the two obvious reasons for this: a trolley was normally also available, and an onboard cafe bar is new to ScotRail so many passengers probably don’t even realise it’s there.

I’m sure the Inter7City café would be well-used with no trolley alternative.

Been on once HST service , with buffet in operation , early days of refurb HSTs. I guess a lot of people were used to the 170s on the routes and not familar with buffets. Least with a buffet more a chance your drink is going to be cold from the fridge.

I've been on 4 refurbs and used / seen them used twice (both last year, sadly they've been closed this year). Speaking to staff, both the buffet and first class are lightly used but perhaps not as much as they've liked - This partially being as route101 points out above that passengers have gone from a 158/170 with a trolley service and a small FC compartment to an I7C with a Buffet and Full FC Coach, and partly because of this years travel restrictions thanks to Covid meaning both Buffet and FC have been closed off - Covid also reducing some of the passenger numbers on the Aberdeen route (less oil, less business). Certainly when I did Aberdeen - Edinburgh in FC last year it seemed reasonably well used and buffet developed a small queue. Hopefully they will pick up soon - the buffet is excellent and much preferred to a trolley (we got caught up in severe disruption last summer and the trolley rapidly ran out of hot water, and snacks), likewise for the excellent FC.

Was first class declassified? I can't quite see why they would stop offering it overall, although of course with no catering that does take away one of the benefits of first!

I’m not sure how it’s been on the HSTs, but I believe on the 170s & EMUs it has been declassified. Both HSTs I took last week had the coach taped out of use, with the staff dispatching from the FC coach.

Of the four scotrail HSTs I went on a few weeks back, three out of four guards let me sit in First and mind my own business, with it taped off for everyone else

Dam, I would have done that! However one of them happened to be behind one of my favourite power cars, so I took the chance to take a trip behind that at the standard class end anyway.

Wonder how long HST will survive the green agenda?
well the recently published masterplan has the routes electrified* by 2035. If it's possible to keep them in good working order, then unless another second hand fleet becomes available then green approach would be to keep the HSTs until new-build electrics can be introduced

*Inverurie-Inverness curently down as potentially discontinuous but hopefully sense will be seen

Has a decision been made to increase the number of coaches from 4 to 5 across the entire fleet yet ?
If an 8 coach HST is relatively expensive to operate, the cost per seat for a 4 carriage set must be near double. Longer trains are cheaper trains to operate per seat assuming the seats can be filled.
