A couple of updates:
  • 320302 was released from Glasgow Works following interior refresh. 320304 has replaced it in the works.
  • 156439 was released from Glasgow Works following its refurbishment. 156437 has replaced it in the works.
Both moves happened earlier today (12/05).

The introduction of these units could be crucial when it comes to the disposal of the 314s presumably at the end of the year.

My dad said a couple of days ago he saw a 320/4 at Kilmarnock looking ready to leave the works.

My dad said a couple of days ago he saw a 320/4 at Kilmarnock looking ready to leave the works.

That'll be the first of the additional 5 conversions - presumably 320404 (ex-321404) which entered the works in October.

There's a path in for a move to Shields tomorrow, but the loco todays path for the assisting loco was cancelled.

The 314s will stay if they're needed; on a short-term basis when they're otherwise going to scrap it's very easy to keep them.

Some images of the refurbishments taking place at KBRS Springburn on Alex Hynes's twitter feed.

320302 - https://twitter.com/AlexHynes/status/984787669447143424
158??? - https://twitter.com/AlexHynes/status/984789937999491072
156??? - https://twitter.com/AlexHynes/status/984791225034268672

The tweet with the 320302 photos says it's 5 days in to a 25 day makeover.

Good to see they're getting power points at seats. Shame they don't appear to include USB ports.

A question.

Is there any requirement for arm rests ?

The 158 refurb is visually impressive But makes the space even more cramped with the wrong seats fitted for tables. It’s worse than before! Cushions too big for the space especially at tables.

The inefficient spaces and gaps between seats wastes space .

Three arm rests per pair of seats . Arm rest next to the window ! Why ? Arm rest to aisle reduces aisle width x2. Catches on bags straps etc. given standing on a 158 is common reduced space and room for getting off in a crowded trains.

Removing arm rests would add another 8 inches of width across the carriage seats could be mounted nearer the bulkhead

But the ironing board seats would have freed up space in this uncomfortable train.

On the other hand 156 refurb is a great improvement.

There is another move later this afternoon from Shields Road to Glasgow Works, probably to take a Class 320/3 unit to the works:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/K91347/2018/08/08/advanced

Correct - 320313 heading for interior refurb.

Quick Class 320 update:

16/06/2018
320304
departed Glasgow Works following interior refresh. 320318 entered the works for the same treatment.

11/07/2018
321420
moved to Wabtec Kilmarnock for conversion to 320/4. It joined 321401 and 321404 undergoing the same work.

31/07/2018
320318
departed Glasgow Works following interior refresh.

08/07/2018
320313
arrived at Glasgow Works for interior refresh.
320404 (ex-321404)
departed Wabtec Kilmarnock to Shields.

Class 320/3 interior refurbs: 6 complete; 1 in progress; 15 to go

Class 321 > 320/4 conversions: 1 released; 2 in progress; 2 still in service with Greater Anglia

Took Class 318 diagram from Glasgow to Gourock yesterday , any reason why this runs? Been a long time on a 318 that way.

I have just heard that Class 385 units will enter service on the North Berwick to Edinburgh Waverley services from Monday,
so I'm guessing more Class 385s will enter service from Monday as well.

That means that by Monday ScotRail will have introduced 17 new EMUs into service since late June. Not too shabby.

So we're on the downslope to mid-Sept and no sign of an HST in service yet, nor are any more refurbished sets apparent on the horizon.

Thinking ahead, what's the schedule for loss of 170s and 158s to elsewhere in the run up to the Dec timetable change? Are SR heading towards an interim slam-door HST vs service cancellations decision?

Not trolling, just wondering how the facts work out as time moves on, it must be coming to decision point soon given all the training etc that may be involved.

Hi Stoney1979,

I thought I might try and answer your question in this thread rather than the HST thread as it seemed a wider question of the total Scotrail stock.

So firstly the question is what stock have Scotrail lost?

9 x 156s due to go off lease, think 5 of them are heading to Northern eventually but not sure if Scotrail are able to keep them in 2019?
18 coaches possibly leaving

I make that a total of:
46 coaches left already
30 coaches leaving end 2018
33 coaches possibly leaving or leaving later in 2019

On the opposite side we need to look at how the DMU requirement has reduced / will reduce:
Edinburgh - Glasgow via Falkirk High
Around 48 coaches (8 x 6 car) needed each day

Glasgow - Falkirk via Cumbernauld
Around 4 coaches (2 x 2 car) needed each day

Glasgow - Stirling / Alloa / Dunblane
About 10 coaches / 5 diagrams (not sure how many 4 car?)

Edinburgh - Dunblane
About 12 coaches / 6 diagrams (not sure how many 3/4 car, complex diagrams to unpick)

Edinburgh - Glasgow via Shotts
Around 16 coaches (6 x 2 car, 1 x 4 car) needed each day

This is very rough estimates as diagrams for all these routes are mixed in with other routes not due to be electrified and there may well be more peak services / strengthened services I haven't accounted for. But this gives us a sort of minimum baseline once these routes go electric. Broadly by May 2019 the daily DMU requirement will be reduced by at least 90 coaches compared to the commencement of the Franchise. The number of DMUs needed to provide 90 operational per day will of course be more like 100-110 units to allow for maintenance / overhaul etc.

The final question is whether there are sufficient EMUs to take up those paths?

320/4s
7 x 3 car in service
5 x 3 car planned

365s
10 x 4 car in service

385s
4 x 3 car in service
2 x 4 car in service

So that is 96 new EMU coaches available as of December 2018 plus however many 385s can be delivered by then (should be at least 20-30 more coaches).

In conclusion then, even assuming that very little in the way of Refurbished HST stock is available by December 2018 it looks like most of the DMUs Scotrail are losing can be replaced by increased use of EMUs.

There are however several assumptions here:
  • Dunblane / Alloa wiring being energised and usable by December 2018
  • Shotts being energised and usable by May 2019
  • Fife Circle continuing to use Loco Hauled stock through 2019
  • 314 retirement being postponed until mid-late 2019
  • Extra Glasgow - Dundee semi fast service being postponed until May 2019 or December 2019
  • Cumbernauld - Edinburgh via Grahamston service being postponed until May 2019 or December 2019

if all those things come to pass then it looks to me like Scotrail will cope with the loss of units in December.

Regarding 156s I thought it was 10 x 156s going off-lease, it was suggested it would become 9 x 156s due to the flooded unit being declared a write-off but hasn't that now been returned to service?

Yes I believe the written off one is now owned by Brodies and hired by Scotrail but I'm not sure whether on a long or short term lease.

As far as I'm aware the 314 withdrawal is still planned to take place between December 2018 - May 2019 and the Queen Street - Edinburgh via Cumbernauld service will start this December.

They may well still be possible but will be dependent on the number of 385s available, the number of HSTs available and how many of the above stock Northern are able to take immediately.

Keeping all the 314s on for another six months would be both politically and financially pretty easy to do compared to short forming other routes or cancelling new services.
