Anyone know if there’s a timetable somewhere for which set types (eg 158/170) run on lines such as Inverness/Aberdeen and Aberdeen/central belt which commonly see different stock types?

You'd have to get access to the unit diagrams but I doubt they would be ublically available anywhere. The closest you'd get would be the real time trains website, but that gives the working timetable but wouldn't state what type of unit was diagrammed. Although the timing for each journey will state which type of unit it is timed for, usually this will be a cl158 as they're the lower top speed of the two.

RTT will show "Class 158 (Express Sprinter) DMU" regardless of actual unit type, because of the way the data is presented - if it's timed for 100mph then it's meant to be a Class 170, if it's timed for 90mph it could be either. If you find one that's diesel locomotive with 377 tonnes trailing (or thereabouts) then that's a short HST set. The LNER HSTs are explicitly identified as HSTs.
