Is a season ticket just valid for journeys starting and ending at the two named stations, or can it be used where either start or end is at an intermediate station?

No a season ticket is valid at intermediate stations between the points shown on the ticket providing it is on a valid route.

What ticket do you hold?

You can use the ticket to travel hop on hop off as much as you like within the validity of the ticket (date) as long as it is on a permitted route of your ticket.

In addition, if you need to travel beyond the validity of your season ticket, you can just buy a ticket from the end poing of the season ticket to your destination. The break of journey rule does not apply to season ticket and regular ticket combinations so your train does not need to physically stop at the break of journey, however, two season tickets or two regular tickets are NOT exempt of this rule and if you do travel with such a combination on a train that doesnt stop at the break of journey, you will need to buy a new ticket all together so you need to be careful.

... The break of journey rule does not apply to season ticket and regular ticket combinations so your train does not need to physically stop at the break of journey, ...

I feel the need to clarify that it has nothing to do with break of journey, which is a different concept altogether.

I think what you meant to say is that "... the train need not stop at the station where the passenger changes over from one ticket to the next if one (and only one) of the tickets held is a season ...".

This is in reference to NRCoC Condition 19.

Other than that you are of course correct. Welcome to the forum.
