Rumors firmly afoot of a second hauled set for Anglia (to cover for 170204?) most likely top and tailed 68's as I don't believe any DBSOs are available, unless of course a DVT is used.

No concrete evidence i'm afraid just strong rumors.

The rumours are exceeding strong as in relevant managers are making the appropriate arrangements. Should be T&T 68s with either Mk2s or Mk3s if not enough suitable Mk2s are available.

May get its own diagram or operate like the original short set as a hot spare. Also possibly only for summer and may disappear once the holiday season comes to and end in September

Are the Mk3s going to be Anglian's own spares, if not, where are they coming from?

TPE's pretendolino?...

Not like we are in a hurry for it, sure a few more weeks for the high summer wont hurt. Hell, chiltern have had 5 of our 170's for a year and havent really used them yet...

Yes but that wasn't their fault

I spied the Pretendolino set in the Orient Way carriage sidings two weeks ago, which rather made me assume it was still in revenue use?

Doubt that, hauled sets and Berney Arms don't go together.

Time for the Rail replacement boat?

--------

I'm guessing Monday to Fridays only, or will it come out to play as crowd busters on summer saturdays to allow another unit to be used elsewhere?

This surfaced on the Class 68 Progress Thread as well, with a start date of the 27th June being quoted. I'm interested to know how this will pan out. The 37s had to be added to Anglia's safety case, and fitted with DRA as they were working t & t. Will this be needed for the 68s or will they be crewed by DRS drivers?.

I am surprised these aren't being covered by an EMT 158 as I would have thought that would be cheaper than any hauled set.

EMT run equally as tight on the DMU front as AGA, the spot hires are only possible because of the timetabling on Liverpool-Norwich. I very much doubt they would commit to a long term lease, I believe they were approached.

Did they also hire in a EMT 156 for a couple of days?
Sam
That was during a blockade (IIRC Nottingham) which caused considerable disruption to the EMT network, thus reducing the amount of units they required.

That's no doubt why only that part of the turn was quoted - as the first 158 dies for the day off the 1911 arrival...

If AGA do only want something short term, there are a number of 172s largely rusting to the rails at LOROL, be interesting to know how long the conversion course from a 170 would be.

Riviera mk2s

.... are likely to be used, yes. Anglia-liveried BSO 9527 has recently received attention at Eastleigh so I'd imagine it'll be an Anglia rake of Riviera carriages.

DRS drivers accompanied by AGA drivers (possibly in rear loco) is what's been mooted. Wouldnt imagine ASLEF tolerating it otherwise.

But the units are just left in the sidings at Norwich after 19:00 - they aren't required until about 05:45 the next day.

No. They all have slots at Crown Point for wash, fuel & exam.

Speaking of, given how Abellio refuse to give DRS any proper time on clown point to maintain the existing Mk2 set, hence it is mainly "done" with all the limitations of a man in a van, do they propose to make any more of an effort for another set? Or are just going to blame everything on DRS again whilst they refuse to allow proper maintenance windows?

I was referring to the question of EMT 158s but I would imagine it would be something similar to now for the second short set. Still seen nothing official reguarding it's diagram or on depot plan. Things are tight enough as it is at certain times over there.

I think EMT are struggling a bit on units. Last week when on a NW rover I saw 2 Norwich-Lime St services that were 156+158 and one that was a solo 158.

I'd expect a twofold approach. DRS may be a lot more on the ball about keeping their brand new toys well looked after. Might be helped by the fact they are likely to be DRS crewed rather than AGA. They may get special instructions. Also, given the 68s are 12 months old rather than 50 odd years they in theory should be more reliable and need less of the general fettling the 37s need.

Norwich really could do with second MPD- maybe if/when there's a new IC fleet it'll get a special shiny new depot. Crown Point's too small for what they need to do

Where? Crown Point occupies the best possible site. A bigger MPD could be built on the site of Crown Point if AGA (or successor franchise) could buy up the land behind that used to be the power station and add to the site a la Ilford.

As to new site. Go east and you are very quickly into the Broads and regularly flooded farmland. West you have the city and then again, out into surprisingly hilly countryside very quickly. In fact, very theoretical thinking there is a large chunk of sidings and old railway land and buildings available at Lowestoft. But that obviously is not a real life option.

Or re-instate the sidings at Great Yarmouth any have all those Yarmouth - Liverpool Street trains back in the timetable ;)

Doubt that, hauled sets and Berney Arms don't go together.

Last time I got off a hauled train at Berney Arms it was on a summer Saturday train from the Midlands. 2 x class 25s and 10 MkIs. Remarkable that it was booked to call there.

I would disputethat - there always seem to be plenty at Eastcroft and Uttoxeter races gets three turns strengthened at the drop of a hat.
I have the impression that both EMT and SWT have relatively low planned availability - hence their 158's golden spanners as they dont fail sat on Salisbury.

"always seem to" and "impression that" don't add up to actually knowing the figures. There was a feature in RAIL recently (I don't have it to hand) on which I based my comments.
