Hello.

Does anyone have the distance (in miles and chains) of the line between Selby and York which was closed in 1983 after the diversionary route was opened please?

Thanks
Phil

Interesting discrepancy with the public t/t - not that that's unheard of.

I understand that the public timetable distances were taken to the nearest quarter-mile post, as it was these that passengers could see for themselves. The distances quoted by Bevan Price probably come from the engineering side who took measurements to the centre of each station - not something passengers could see or measure for themselves!

What is the distance between Doncaster and York via the current route?
32.5 miles, from menory! That's what I recall being in the public timetable anyway. I just noticed it's longer than the miles and chains for the old route though.

Indeed. Interestingly, the error is at York 188 vs 188m 40c.

Thank you gentlemen. I've always thought the old route via Selby was shorter but the difference is smaller than I'd realised. There was of course a 45 mph speed restriction through Selby so I suppose B. R. was secretly pleased to be given an alternative route.

definitely so since the national coal board paid for it!
