Is there a good case for one of the Cross Country services to call at Stone? It is a reasonable sized town and the current one train per hour frequency seems a bit inadequate, especially when so many services pass through. Half hourly to Stoke, Stafford and Birmingham would probably be very useful, as would an hourly service to Manchester.

Also were there Trent Valley line platforms at Stone at any point and if so could they be reinstated to allow quick links to the Trent Valley towns?

I'd have said yes before because a Birmingham service is probably more useful than a Euston one (e.g. for commuting), but now the "wobble" service is for Birmingham rather than London I would say not necessary, it is still a local station. Manchester can easily be reached with a quick change to Avanti at Stoke.

Could only be a 4 car in the up direction as the platform is too short. It would also knacker the timetable. If you were adding another XC stop (and could), you would do it at Congleton.
It also brings into question the obvious "should XC be stopping at any old shack"

Is there anything which prevents XC from stopping at Congleton ? Because the timings for the couple a day which do stop there appear to be the same for those which don't between Stoke, Macc and Stockport.

But yes - I agree Congleton (popn 26,000) would be better than Stone (popn 16,000) - even before you look at platform lengths and knock-on effects to the timetable.

Not looked, but you would expect Congleton to add 3 minutes into a schedule.

Actually I should have put 'did' call rather than 'do' - because they've been dropped owing to Covid impact on the timetable, along with a few other stations XC no longer serve.

At least Congleton has some semblance of a Sunday service now - half a dozen trains at sensible, if slightly long, intervals - it's not that long ago it had only a couple with the first one about 4 in the afternoon......
