Preservation thread of sorts, so here goes ...

Anyone ever booked and stayed in the following Holiday Cottage lets ?

Dent Railway Station
Ribblehead Station Masters House
Kirby Stephen Booking Office / Platform Cottages?

I guess that under Covid travel restrictions, UK destinations are in high demand. Of the 3, Dent looks most expensive at 1300 quid for a week in peak season 4 sharing but the most remote. I do like the look of Ribblehead Station Masters house though as it is cheaper

Anyone had experience of holidays in any of these?

They all look to be under care / ownership of S&C Railway Trust or FOSCL so in a good cause I believe.

Not stayed in any, but Kirkby Stephen is within walking distance of the town -Ribblehead has the pub, and of course the viaduct and Whernside.

In addition to these three, the station building at the closed Long Marton station - four miles North of Appleby - is also a (privately-owned) holiday let. There is a pub in the village less than five minutes walk away and it's a great area for walking.

I’ve stayed in (one half of) the Kirkby Stephen cottage. It’s very nice but it’s quite a long walk into town and it’s a very steep hill to negotiate when you’ve been to the pub. Do yourself a favour and book a taxi.

Likewise the above. Stayed at 'Platform Cottage' at Kirkby Stephen a few years ago. All very pleasant, was rather atmospheric in an evening & was far cheaper than Dent or Ribblehead. Very strange feeling being woken up by a freight thundering through the station at three in the morning.

Delighted that Dent has been picked up by the FOSCL - it was on the market for a fair while.

At least there's a surfaced path now! Until a while ago (8 years or so?) it was just a public footpath across the fields, and the cows liked churning it up in one corner particularly so in winter it was a quagmire.

Also, I believe the snow huts at Dent are also holiday lets.

The footpath is a very good quality. Certainly beats dodging the traffic on the main road !

Yes the snow huts are.

I stayed at the station twice and I believe the previous owner retained the snow huts (he also used to stay there himself when he visited) when he sold the station.

I reckon Ribblehead would be best as it has a slightly better train service with a mid evening train back from Skipton and Settle, plus the adjacent pub and a certain viaduct!

Some may see this as a positive others not so much. Either way there is only one night time booked freight running Tuesday to Friday and even then some weeks this is booked for a later path. You cannot of course rule out ‘one off‘ movements but these are only very occasional.
