HMS Thatcham was one of 93 Royal Navy ships of the Ham-class of inshore minesweepers.

Their names were all chosen from villages ending in -ham. Therefore, the minesweeper HMS Cranham was named after Cranham in Gloucestershire.

Goulceby was the birthplace of William Marwood, the hangman who invented the "long drop" system of execution.

He died in 1883 from pneumonia and jaundice and was buried at Trinity Church, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.
