King's School, Canterbury claims to be the oldest extant school in the world (founded 597AD). The second oldest is said to be King's School Rochester (founded 604AD). The king concerned is Henry VIII who re-founded both schools.

Saffron Walden is another location that was affected by The Municipal Corporations Act 1835 (5 & 6 Wm. IV., c.76), sometimes known as the Municipal Reform Act; subsequently repealed by The Municipal Corporations Act 1882.

Saffron Walden was visited in May 1647 by Oliver Cromwell. He went on later that year to participate in the Putney Debates on the future governance of England.

A cockatrice (a dragonish thing with a cockerel's head) is said to reside in Fishlake churchyard. The same mythical beast is the emblem of No 3 Squadron RAF, based at Coningsby. (they probably pinched it from Fishlake on a good night out)
